TNM donates medical equipment to Majete maternity unit

Malawi’s premier mobile phone company, TNM Friday donated medical equipment worth K1.2 million to Majete Maternity Unit in Chikhwawa district.

Speaking at the handover ceremony Kamoto said the donation was bought using money accrued from an interest the company earned with the banks from its mobile money service, Mpamba.

“We have used the interest accrued from our mobile money product, Mpamba to buy these medical equipments. Mpamba operates under the TNM Mobile Money Board of Trustees. The principle of Mpamba wallet is different from a bank account. The money in the customer wallet does not earn interest. However because it is kept in a trust account in the bank, some interest is earned on this money and it is this money that we have used to buy these medical equipments,” said Kamoto.

He said the donation was made in order to celebrate the network’s acquisition of a 2 millionth customer. In July this year the company registered its 2 millionths customer and the number is growing at greater pace, according to Kamoto.

TNM officials making the donations

Receiving the donation, Chikhwawa Chief Nursing Officer Flossy Fatch thanked TNM for the donation. According to Fatch the maternity unit was opened in August by President Joyce Banda but it has not been operational due to lack of equipment.

“With these medical equipments, we will now engage the Medical Council of Malawi to inspect the facility so that it can start operating. We expect the facility to assist over a thousand pregnant women per year,” said Fatch.

The donation included beds, linen, delivery kits and buckets.
