Trinity College of Nursing in Nsanje reduces student intake

Trinity College of Nursing and Midwifery under Chikwawa Diocese of the Roman Catholic Church in Nsanje has reduced its intake from 100 to 60 students per year, the College’s Acting Principal, Fanny Stevens, confirmed the development.

According to Stevens,this has happened due to the reduced number of tutors, students’ scholarships at the institution and financial constraints.

“As a college, we are facing numerous challenges. We have critical shortage of tutors and reduced scholarships for needy students. Currently, we have only eight tutors out of the required number of 12,” she said.

She added that with the current number of tutors, the college cannot enroll more saying doing so would compromise the quality.

Stevens made the revelation last weekend when the institution graduated 91 Nursing and Midwifery Technicians (NMTs).

In addition, the principal said the institution has no reliable transport to ferry students to different destinations for practical work.

According to Stevens, the institution uses a lorry to ferry students. She said such mode of transport is not conducive for students and is also against road traffic regulations.

“We are not generating much to go round the problems we are currently going through. Our financial management is quite impressive, only that we are going through difficult times,” said the principal.

She however said despite all the hiccups, the institution has managed to improve on its passing rate.

She gave the example of the May, 2017 Nurses Council Examinations where she said her college achieved 100 per cent pass rate.

In his remarks, Traditional Authority (T/A) Mlolo, who is a woman, advised girls to take education seriously, saying education is the tool for empowerment.

She therefore asked the graduates to go to the world and make a difference and continue aiming big in life.
