Tumaini Festival hosts pre-event in Lilongwe
Tumaini Festival—an annual event aimed at encouraging co-existence between the refugees and the locals, which takes place at Dzaleka Refugees Camp in Dowa—on Saturday hosted a pre-festival, showcasing children’s talents at the Lilongwe Wildlife Centre.
The show was aimed at exposing children’s skills and talents, apart from bringing co-existence among the refugees and children from within Lilongwe.
The children showcased poetry, music and dances, among others.
Dance groups that performed included Hear Us Children from Music Crossroads, Star Boys, Salama Africa, Parliament Rwanda and the Arts Club from Dzaleka.
The toast of the day were the Arts Club from Dzaleka who performed several dances in a rhythmic and energetic stance that dazzled.
The show brought 150 children (performers and audience) from the refugee camp as well as Music Crossroads .
According to the Tumaini Festival founder and director Menes La Plume, this is one of the events that come before the main festival in November.
“I am grateful for the audience that came to watch this event despite low publicity. We have also lined up other pre-events such as poetry, film making, photography workshop and a movie night aimed at creating hype for the main festival,” said La Plume.
This year’s Tumaini Festival is expected to feature a number of talents, including bands from Japan and South Africa, Waliko Makhala, Tay Grin, Code Sangala, Find Codi, Malala, Mubanga Band from Karonga, Yankho Seunda, Nyamalikiti Nthiwatiwa and a variety of traditional dances.
