Two Malawians sentenced to death by hanging in Zambia
The Chipata High court in Zambia has sentenced two Malawian nationals to death by hanging after they were found guilty of murder and aggravated robbery.
According to a report in Zambian Watchdog High court Judge Dominic Sichinga found business man Chancy Mtambalika 35 of Mtambalika Moyo village, T/A M’mbelwa and carpenter Thomas Makina of T/A Chikowi, Zomba guilty as charged.
The court heard that the two accused persons on December 15, 2012 in Lundazi district jointly and whilst armed with a gun, stole a vehicle Toyota Corolla registration number ALF 7106 valued at ZK 27, 000, 000-00 belonging to Derrick Simasiku Ling’umbwa.
Judge Sichinga said he had convicted the two upon carefully considering the testimonies of witnesses.
He said all witnesses were steadfast in their testimony and their evidence remained unchallenged.
Justice Sichinga said he was convinced that the two acted together in killing and stealing the vehicle of Derrick Ling’umbwa.
He said the first state witness, Billy Mawelela identified both convicts during identification parade at Lundazi police.
Justice Sichinga observed that when put on defence Chancy Mtambalika’s testimony that he bought the vehicle from Billy Mawelela was not true as eveidence that Mawelela who was on the vehicle with the deceased at the time the crime was committed, knew Mtambalika.
Justice Sichinga sentenced the two to death until pronounced dead and asked God to bless their souls.
Father of the deceased Brighton Ling’umbwa said he had waited patiently for the final verdict of the case and expressed satisfaction with the judgement.
