Two passengers killed in Balaka minibus accident

Two people are confirmed dead and a conductor missing after a mini bus road accident which happened last night in Balaka district in eastern Malawi.

Balaka Police publicist Josehph Sauka says the accident happened at Chikombola along Balaka – Liwonde road when the driver of the Toyota Hiace Mini Bus registration number MH 6124, Mustafa Tambala 21, failed to control the vehicle after a rear tyre busted.

Sauka says the mini bus was coming from Lilongwe to Liwonde with 18 passengers on board and upon arrival at Chikombola, its rear tyre busted and the driver swerved to the right hand side of the road where it overturned killing two passengers on the spot and several others injured.

“Most of the victims sustained minor injuries and were treated at Balaka District Hospital while two sustained serious injuries. They have been referred to Zomba and Queen Elizabeth Central Hospital respectively. The driver escaped unhurt while the conductor is nowhere to be seen,” says Sauka.

According to Sauka, one of the deceased has been identified as Shalom Mwale 28 who comes from Zomba but was residing in Lilongwe.

“The other one is a male person and brown in complexion. At the time of the accident wore a khaki pair of trousers, white long sleeved shirt and brown sandals. His body is being kept at Balaka District Hospital Mortuary.

Meanwhile, the driver is in Police custody and is expected to appear before court where he will answer a case of causing death due to reckless driving.

Why a case of reckless driving when it was a tyre that got burst? What about the parliamentary speaker’s case that has been treated as fatal accident. This is a case of treating some people more equal than others. An accident is an accident.
