U.S. imposes visa ban on Malawi presidential advisor Uladi over corruption

The United States has banned President Peter Muhtarika’s special advisor Uladi Basikolo Mussa from entry due to his involvement in “significant corruption,”  Nyasa Times has learnt.

Uladi Mussa: Special advisor to President Mutharika is banned for entry in U.S

Mussa allegedly engaged in and benefited from public corruption in relation to his official duties while minister of Home Affairs and Internal Security.

The U.S. Department statement seen by Nyasa Times said the Secretary of State is publicly designating Mussa, the current Malawian Special Advisor on Parliamentary Affairs and former Minister of Home Affairs, due to his involvement in significant corruption.

“Mr. Mussa engaged in and benefited from public corruption in relation to his official duties while Minister of Home Affairs,” reads the statement.

The statement said the designation is made under Section 7031(c) of the Department of State, Foreign Operations, and Related Programs Act of 2019.  Section 7031(c)  which provides that, in cases where the Secretary of State has credible information that foreign officials have been involved in significant corruption or gross violations of human rights, those individuals and their immediate family members are ineligible for entry into the United States.

“The law also requires the Secretary of State to publicly or privately designate such officials and their family members.”

In addition to the Visa ban of Mussa, the  U.S. Secretary of State  has also banned  Mussa’s spouse, Cecillia Mussa form entry to the country.

Mussa is also a ruling Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) vice president for the central region.

Both presidential spokesperson Mgeme Kalilani and government spokesperson Mark Botomani declined to comment on the matter, saying they had not yet received any communication from the US Embassy in relation to the issue.

I doubt if the US has tangible evidence against JB. get me right, I don’t say JB is innocent in the cashgate scam, but they don’t just act based on speculation

The question should be why isn’t APM arresting JB then? what happened to the warrent of arrest that was issued before she jetted in? If you use your brain the answer is the same reason the US cant ban JB!!

So when our ‘esteemed’ leader wishes to attend the next UN General Assembly in New York he too will have his visa refused – at least let’s hope so, as he is the chief of corruption..

That ban has somehow missed the target. APM should as well be banned. He is the cause of the rot we can all see around.

May be not, but the structures put in place are greater than one individual who might be occupying the presidency now.

@Bellan: You’re sure about your proposition? In the age of Trump when his family and business entities are openly benefiting from his presidency?

You might wonder why Uladi is the first victim, he issued passports to Burundi and Rwandese, many of whom had played some roles in the genocide. They changed names and can travel anywhere, whilst they are wanted in their countries for those crimes. He, in other words facilitated movement of criminals
