The four are Ishmael Chilambo (UDF), Thom Lita (DPP) Mathews Shaba (PP) and Harry Thom Lichowa (MCP). This means that the four are set to wrestle for the seat of Ndirande Makata Ward in the forthcoming by elections scheduled for October 17 this year.

Malawi Electoral Commission (MEC) Returning Officer Charles Chaima described the process as a success and commended every candidate for taking the initiative to come and present the papers.

Chaima also hailed the parties for observing order as there was total peace both before and after presentation of the papers.

“I am excited that everything went as planned and we are looking forward to the actual voting date,” Chaima said.

In an interview after presenting their nomination papers, all candidates promised to continue developing Ndirande Makata Ward, which they observed lacked essential facilities and services.

“I will continue with developments such as construction of bridges, maintenance of street lights and school blocks,” said Lichowa of MCP.

On his part, Lita of DPP said, as a youthful candidate, his main focus would be to improve the wellbeing of the youth and ensure that they take part in the development of the country.

“I will ensure that the youth in this country actively participate in development activities and continue to be leaders in a number of programs,” he said.

On the other hand, Chilambo and Shawa promised to promote women and foster other development programs taking place in the country.

The by-election in Ndirande follows the death of Cecelia Zeka Phiri who passed on in 2016.
