UK Malawians to celebrate Independence Day in Manchester July 6

Malawians in the United Kingdom are set to celebrate Malawi’s 49th independence in Manchester city Saturday  where the High Commissioner  Benard Sande will be in attendance.

Masses are set to gather in Manchester where many have already confirmed their attendance to the event which is to be held on July 6th, the official day of Malawi ’s national independence.

Malawi Manchester Association (MMA) secretary general Madalitso Mpoya  told Nyasa Times that they are delighted to host the event this year after being chosen the  the mother body of Malawian community in liason with the High Commission.

“What this means is that all Malawians in UK will meet in Manchester for the celebrations on Saturday, July 6,” said Mpoya.

He disclosed that a lot of activities have been arranged for the day, explaining that from 12pm to 5pm, Malawians will meet for free sports activities.

There will be a football and netball tournament involving Malawian teams from different cities in UK such as Nottingham, London, Manchester, Derby, Leeds, Nothampton and Leicester and many more.

These games will take place at King George Park, Chapman street, Gorton , Manchester M18 8WQ.

Additional games include basketball and bawo. There will also be a barbeque and children will be kept entertained by a jumping castle that will be at the park.

After the sports activities, the celebrations will go into its second phase which is a dinner dance.

With an entrance fee of £10, Malawians will meet, eat and dance to the music played by Malawian Djs. The dinner dance will take place at Gorton Community café, The Sacred Heart Hall, Levenhulme Road, Gorton Manchester M18 8WJ from 7pm till late.

All these events will be attended by Malawi top diplomat to UK Bernard Sande.

“We are expecting a large turnout of Malawians and that is why we want people to secure their tickets for the dinner dance early. We have friends from other nationalities who will also join us in the celebrations so it’s a very big thing and any Malawian based in UK need not to miss it,” said Mpoya.

In a related development, Malawi Association in Scotland has organised the 49th anniversary Malawi Independence Day Celebrations on Saturday, 6th July 2013 at The Whiteinch Centre, 1 Northinch Court, Glasgow, G14 0UG, Scotland from 13:00 hrs to 18:00 hrs.
