Underage enrollment in public schools worry Malawi education minister
Education minister Emmanuel Fabiano has expressed concern over enrollment of under age children.
Fabiano said this is retrogressive in government’s efforts to offer the best education to learners.
“Public schools are full of children who are less than six years old and this is causing unnecessary congestion in infant classes,” said Fabiano.
He said this makes it impossible for the under age learners to acquire reading ad writing skills and asked parents to send all under age learners to nursery schools where they belong.
“The situation is worse. Twenty five per cent of the learners in Standard One in public schools are under age,” said Fabiano.
He said the ministry did the survey on the underage children in public schools in February.

THOSE WHO HAVE DONE EDUCATION UNDERSTANDS WHAT DR FABIANO IS SAYING. ONE NEEDS KNOWLEDGE IN EDUCATION PSYCHOLOGY WHICH EXPLAINS LEARNING MENTAL PROCESSES WITH AGE. IT IS FOR THIS REASON THAT TEACHING METHODOLOGIES DIFFER AS AGE OF LEARNERS CHANGES. THIS IS ALSO THE REASON WHY MANY YOUNG STUDENTS IN THE UNIVERSITIES ARE DOING VERY POORLY BECAUSE THE COLLEGE TEACHING METHODS ARE NOT PADA, SINGING AND DANCING. YOU MAY SAY MY UNDERAGE IS DOING WELL NOW, BUT BELIEVE YOU ME, THERE IS A HIGH CHANCE OF ABRUPT FALL ANYTIME AND YOU WILL BE SURPRISED HOW IT HAS HAPPENED. ASK AN EDUCATIONIST, AND… Read more »
I v neva heard a stupid statement like this one. This minister is really full
Useless buffoon
being underage does not mean failing to read and write. Check the same underage children at nursery school and the right-aged in standard one at public school you will find that the nursery children are better than the standard ones. Mr. Minister, make your analysis well to come up with sound intervention. Why are our children failing to get better education? its not their age but our standards. Poorly qualified teachers, poor motivated teachers through torturous salaries, poor learning infrastrug underage does not mean failing to read and write. Check the same underage children at nursery school and the right-aged… Read more »
And yet this minister will claim government has no money when he drives 3 vehicles. A 4×4 Toyota for rural a benz for urban and a calmly for the wife. Each allocated fuel in excess of its requirement. That is where only one vehicle could have done perfectly. So be humane that is why we say the government is run by dogs since 1994. Perhaps it’s voted in by dogs too who seem to be in majority. Can you imagine you collecting 200 Kwachas every day from your tomato selling wife as transport to work only to end up drinking… Read more »
Stupid man. I started primary school at 5 years old and made it bwino bwino. The solution is not to bar underage children from class one you dumb ass
Please, poor Malawian education minister try to visit Caribbean countries, Islands and see how good English expressed by primary school children than those of yours from so called Chanco!!!!!
Expressing better English doesn’t mean one is well educated Know the difference Mr. My garden boy speaks perfect English.
What a great observation by the ministry but wrong analysis and lessons drawn. My limited thoughts would have liked a ministerial statement which is indicative of a deliberate approach in policy towards Early Child Development.
The country has lost it on leadership if the minster is reduced to a crumpet of doom .
