University lecturer, MACRA official dead in 7-vehicle crash

A Mzuzu University lecturer and Malawi Communications Regulatory Authority (MACRA) employee have been killed in a road accident after their vehicles were involved in a seven-vehicle pile up in the wee hours of Sunday.

The accident occurred around 3.00am along the Mzimba-Mzuzu M1 Road near Toyota Malawi offices, about a kilometer away from Mzuzu City Center.

The lecturer has been identified as Titus Bwalo while the MACRA employee is Alfred Nakhwema.

The car wrecked as lives as lost

According to eye witnesses, the seven vehicles slammed into each as they avoided a stationery three-tonner lorry which was carrying timber from Chikangawa Forest in Mzimba heading towards Mzuzu.

Police say the ropes which the three tonner lorry used to lash plunks got loose and in the process the timber started falling off one by one from the over-loaded vehicle.

And as the vehicle attempted to avoid the falling planks they resulted in smashing into each other.

The deceased died on the spot while five others were rushed to Mzuzu Central Hospital where they are receiving treatment.

According to head of traffic for the Northern Region Police, Kings Phiri, three of the five survivors have deep cuts in their heads while two are carrying bruises.
