Woget crowned Blantyre Urban Netball Pres Cup champions
Woget Stars were crowned 2012-2013 Blantyre Urban Netball Presidential Champions for the second consecutive time after beating Glass Bank in a fierce battle on Saturday, July 14, 2012 at the netball cathedral, Blantyre Youth Centre in the commercial city of Malawi, Blantyre.
Woget notched 34 baskets to 29.
Woget, who were defending the cup displayed classic netball through their match makers Ednar Notachengwa and captain Tadala Billy.
Glass Bank showed their class in Patricia ‘Mashini’. Each time Karunga posses a ball, it lead into a basket to the delight of many spectators.
Immediatley, after the final whistle was blown, Woget Stars sponsor, Phaskani Nthara was on cloud nine and the players went into a kwasa-kwasa dancing party.
Nthara told Nyasa Times after the game that he was delighted for defending the cup.
“I am more than happy with my players and l can assure them for more sponsorship in the coming season of the Presidential Cup,” said Nthara, while sipping a glass of Carlsberg Beer.
The guest of the honour, Martha Matewere from Southern Region Netball Committee hailed the Head of State for the trophy and urged her to continue with the trophy next season.
“Let me take an opportunity to thank our Head of State for this trophy. In netball we do not have many trophies, as such with the introduction of the Presidential Netball Cup, it has helped us a slot
to unearth hidden talent,” said Matewere.
Joyce Chalusa, who is the vice person for Southern Netball Committee urged girls to work hard during such cups for them to stand a chance to be spotted by coaches from big teams.
“This is your chance to showcase your talent because we have coaches from big teams, who watch your matches,” said Chalusa.
For becoming champions, Woget went home with K100, 000 while Glass Bank received K50, 000 for scooping second slot.
Thirteen teams took part in the Blantyre Urban Netball Presidental Cup with the likes of Chilomoni Stars, Kamanga Babies, Ulemu Sisters, Izo Izo Stars, Hammers, Blantyre University, St Marys and Ntopwa Super Queens.
