University of Malawi students at Poly open letter to Major Prophet Bushiri: SOS

The students at Polytechnic, a constituent college of the University of Malawi, have penned Major 1 Prophet Shepherd Bushiri to intervene in their wrangle with the University Of Malawi Council over the closure of  the institution.

This comes after the University’s Chancellor President Peter Mutharika distanced himself from the problems facing the university.

The students are also calling for the firing of the entire university management for “failing to solve that problem.”

Here is the letter to Major Prophet, Shepherd Bushiri.

Major 1,
In the spirit of the season, please receive our humble greetings. We greet you with swollen hearts. Hearts that are tired of oppression and bullying. Hearts that are heavy with agony, anguish and hopelessness.

Major 1 Prophet Bushiri

We, the students of University of Malawi, Polytechnic, have followed your teachings. They border on hardwork and determination. They border on making sacrifices and living by the standards set by oneself. You are a living testimony of your own teachings. Not only have you accumulated so much spiritual blessings from the Lord,
you have also been blessed with riches.

One thing that we know has set you apart from the rest of the people in your league is that you are selfless, humble, benevolent and patriotic. You have used both your spiritual and earthly riches to touch the lives of millions of Malawians and many people from across the globe. May the good Lord continue blessing you abundantly Father.

It is with the beliefs outlined above that we come to you for your assistance. We are tired, abused, lied to and left to wither in the scorching heat of oppression by the people we entrusted with the mandate to govern us.

Major 1, you may be interested to know that our institution has been on shutdown for the past five months. The reason for the shutdown is that the authorities want to force the students to pay K400, 000 each student per year when infact we are not subjective to the new fees structure in the 2015/2016 academic year. The matter has been in and out of the courts and on all those occasions, justice has always favoured us, the students.

However, even with one and half academic year behind, our authorities still haven’t seen the wisdom to open the college. Their argument is that they still have a deficit of about 2 billion Kwacha.

The saga has left us loitering the nooks and crannies of our country with nothing but anguish in our souls. We are living everyday hoping to hear that the powers that be, have finally found that solution to our tribulations. Sadly, our cries have fallen on deaf ears. Ears that have no time to listen to the concerns of a bunch of young and poor students who are trying so hard to be something in this life.

Major 1, as it stands now, you are the only person standing between hope and damnation. You are the only individual who can pull us out of this misery. You are the only one who can come in to help us get back to school. The dreams of thousands of young, brilliant and ambitious Malawians depend on your intervention.

We humbly ask you to assist us in any way you can to see us back in class. We remain hopeful that our plea will see the light of the day. May the good Lord continue blessing you in all your endeavours.

Yours,
Embattled Poly Students.

  1. The so called Poly Students, let me remind you that you are not the only citizens in this country. Your fellow youth are paying exorbitant fees in private universities. The fees you claim to be high is not enough for a semester. This does not mean they have enough money but they failed to secure places in public universities. Therefore do not be selfish. Do you want the government to spend all taxpayer’s money on you alone? If you see public universities expensive then try private sector.

  2. Ignorance Polly,s.The economic problem issue is globally, we are in rich foreign countries where by students are rioting for the same matters. They are not writting to donnas for their problems or calling for fake prophets. They are dealing with government.

  3. mmmmmu zonyoza president ai,sichapafupi kukhala president, ganizan nobwi, fees imawawa nthaw zose, liman soya bas, chisomo sapempha tiwonela iwe

  4. our economic and political think-tanks are failing the move! university students are not
supposed to be treated like kindergarten kids…they are the prospective magnus opus of the country
and need to be well managed

  5. You can go through education without education going through you. Mwati umbuli wathu uzatha? Kulemba kalata kwa Bushiri ndiye zithandiza chani ? Anthu a ku university amended kapena some Bushiri boys just to put him in the news? Or the new PRO has started his job with his own tricks?

  6. Things are so high ,im paying my daughter K150 000 /Term in secondary xool what about UNIMA even if the government say pay half u will still cry anas school tasiyani ndale please konzani tsogolo lanu basi zithu zada kale

  7. Students at KCN, CoM, Chancol are paying revised fees who do these spanner wielding good for nothing unethical mechanics think they are? Munya mafana!!!!! APM osatsegula poly unless they accept revised fees tione apange suffer ndani?

  8. The Students Are In Quanderly That Much I know But They Need To Channel Their Concerns To Those In Authority Until They Do Something Tangible. On The Other Sending A letter To Major One For Scholarships Could Be Specific Rather Than Beating About The Bush As It Has Been In The Letter&there Is Nothing If These Students Ask For Assistance In A good Faith For Bushiri Is A fellow Malawian.

  9. prophet bushiri , major 1 is not the right person to help solve the wrangles between university and students. Its APM who is on the centre of moving the university education forward….., if APM ..,.can not afford to solve problems in Malawian universities, then I think APM should ask himself why he bothered honourable Malawian citizens to vote for him, becoz what he is doing is to tell us he can not manage to run the affairs of the state. …..so who is president then? bushiri can always help in other areas of your needs,as a charity man, but problems in universities now re requires wisdom from countrie’ leadership.

  10. Hahaha. Those days are over of waiting from some body else to pray for you. Make your own time, bring your self closer to GOD and ask him what ever you want. Today’s so called prophet most of them are liars. Listen on what they are preaching its always about making you and famous not to save you from the Most king of liars and destruction which is Devil. Mwakula guys stop that nonsense.

  11. They are not the first people to be at that university.. the deal is everyone owing university of malawi abweze ndalama.. magraduate ambiri sanabweze 2, fees alipire yokwerayo failing which economy sikuyendabwino university kumalawi idzasowa funding no subsidies..even money the Gvt gives to KCH, or QUEENS hospital zimakhala under budget. Pamene iwo akupanga ma dinner party’s. Best solution fees aliyense alipire basi… Mojor 1 akathandiza mukuti akufuna kulanda boma umbuli nsanje ya jealous… all men of God are not not loved in this country these days…men of GOD fears members these days they trust not everyone….but am hundred percent sure people can sort out the mess we are in.. in this country.. but people are fearing umbuli wa mapolitician ophunzila ofuna ma udindo not to help poor malawians.. Malawian lets love one onether please..mojor 1 he better distance himself in this … wanyozedwa mokwana ndi anthu pamene ankafuna kuthandiza.

  12. I hope by the grace of Almighty God, it will work. We all know that in a family the heard is a father. If a father is refusing and openily tell the family that he can’t handle the problem of the family. The family goes to ask and look for help. If you can follow the problem at Polytecnic, the problem was in the court and the Council was told to let the students to pay the previous fees not the current one. And they were also told to open the college as soon as possible and they did not. But the President and the Ministry of Educaction are just watching. The President being a father of the nation refused publically not to handle any problems in colleges. What else students can do. The solution is to seek for help to those who can give help. Major 1 please help the student who are crying and looking for help.

    To Major 1,
Just major on other people who need your help not these students otherwise they will destroy our companies as you have seen this poor university letter.

Waiting for you in 2019 as our president voti ili kale nthumba koma sikunyowa kusodyesa mavumbulutso.

  17. Guys we know that you are desperate but this is a childish channel you have followed. You need to understand that University Education everywhere is expensive. MK400,000 per annum is equivalent to almost $550 per annum or $275 per semester or $68 per month (MK50,000). Where in the world can you find University education as cheap as this? Most of you guys are coming from private secondary schools where you were paying over MK900,000 per annum.

For a University to function it needs money to pay university lecturers and other bills. The only wise fight you could have been pursuing would have been increased access to student loans not a decrease in tuition fees. Wise up guys!!

    1. Zoona ndithu Mphwache wa Bingu. The fees are too low. Besides government pays (cash) to the students more than what they are being asked to contribute, in addition to subsiding the education costs. I don’t understand these undergraduates… In fact students need to understand that what they are being asked to pay is merely a contribution towards their fees! Perhaps the university should tell them the full fees they are supposed to pay, then they will come to their senses.

  18. kkkkkkkkkkkkk – a Malawi ulesi – anakunamizani ndani kuti school is cheap?. You have to sweat for your success otherwise forget it. Nthawi zonse kufuna zaulere basi, Tertiary education is not as cheap as you think even in developed countries. You want everything for free including sex.

  19. It seems the students are pleading for financial assistance so that the college opens up. No politics in this, the gentleman in question has a university in Sudan and am sure the students realizes that he can be of great help to them. I have no problem with this.

  20. The composition makes good reading. Unfortunately, it is childish. I wonder how can the Prophet assist to have Poly re-opened, else, do you want Prophet Bushiri to give you scholarships? The letter is not clear which area do you want the Prophet to tackle? To condemn govt? To order APM to open Poly? To order Unima to slash fees down? Which area, say it guys.

This kind of thinking and attitude will just provoke other than heal the already sour relationship between Poly Students and Govt. My free advice to the students is; do not abandon existing channels of communication because your solution will pass through the same.

  21. Major, Just stand for President. I don’t mind getting wet on the line the whole day to see you in power. We need leadership that can listen and solve our problems not run away from them. Leaders who know why we vote for them

  22. Some students are very dull. I dont know if these are really university brains. Do they expect bushiri to open the poly when he isnt an authority in malawi? Isnt this shit your own making by refusing fee hike when its clear poly need to? Wasnt it only wise to accept hike and then ask bushiri to pump 10 billion u want? U are worsening the situation because by the end of the day bushiri wont force govt to open poly.

  23. To the poly students, Major 1 is an ordinary man. He has no power over your institution. Please ask Peter, the chancellor, the president of the Republic of Malawi. Are you undermine him? He should not run away from his responsibility. That is the problem of voting in office people who do not care. Please, Peter, do something
