University of Malawi investigates report of student in distress over financial and academic pressures

The University of Malawi (UNIMA) says it is investigating reports that a third-year student left a note expressing suicidal thoughts, reportedly linked to financial difficulties and academic pressure.

According to the note, the student, named as Joseph Njeni Major, said he had been due to graduate with the 2021/2022 cohort but was withdrawn from his studies on financial grounds before completing them.

He described himself as a self-sponsored student who had struggled to secure assistance despite reaching out to several people, and said he felt unable to move forward with his life as a result.

The note reportedly cited a number of pressures, including responsibility as a household breadwinner, debts said to total K594,500, academic pressure, limited access to a laptop and digital learning platforms, and difficulties related to accommodation and daily survival.

The authenticity of the note and the current wellbeing of the student could not be independently verified at the time of writing. The university says it is looking into the matter.
