University of Malawi professor gives Mutharika an F for ‘poor leadership ‘

Associate professor and head of political and administrative studies at Chancellor College of the University of Malawi , Happy Kayuni, has given President Peter Mutharika an F for lacking critical analysis of social-political developments in the country.

Kayini: FaultsMutharika's leadership style
Kayini: Faults Mutharika’s leadership style

The fail comes in the wake of ongoing Judiciary strike and economic downturn, as the political analyst has saidMutharika is not providing the leadership required to effectively manage crises.

Kayuni, however,  said he did not mean that Mutharika should always be the first to respond to any situation.

“But there are some situations which by their perceived significance call upon the immediate response from the higher office,” Kayuni told Nation on Sunday/

“The Judiciary strike should have been given priority due to the role of this institution in consolidation of democratic governance in the country. Inability to respond immediately demonstrates lack of commitment to democratic governance,” he said.

He further said the sealing of the Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB) officers, clearly demonstrated that government lacks conflict resolution skills and also puts into question the President’s commitment to entrenchment of democratic ethos in this country.

“Any leader who has a keen eye to the wider political environment should take a more reconciliatory approach rather than what is happening.

“Even if ACB officers claim to have resumed their work, what would guarantee their effectiveness after such a hard-line approach against them?” said Kayuni as quoted by the paper.

  1. I am not sure if we need to blame the president or his government on the strikes for example. Judiciary strike is for people that are greedy. Same with ACB.

Such type of strikes needs different approaches where divide and rule is among the options.

  2. Peter is a typical example of a failure…i cnt point at anyting good he has done since he ascended into office..The problem with malawi is that the majority of ha nationals are uneducated..People hu vote someone jst coz he/she comes from the same area or region as theirs..I believe if all malawians wea az educated az northerners malawi would have been somewhere.(foolish lomwes)

  4. Man Kayuni , what will you tell the nation about thr kwacha stabilization. Or are you in the know that the kwacha is appreciating against the dollar ? Tell the nation if that happens automatically or you think there are people doing something behind the scenes.

Tell the nation why it is only the northerners that are unable to see anything good on this leadership. Is it sour grapes syndrome or naivety ?

Kayuni, tell this nation your criteriafor granting grade “f”. Was it regional or facial. Why should I think you are a real proffesor whenyou cannot make a sound analysis of Iissues.

  5. PROFESSOR PETER MUTHALIKA IS AND WILL ALWAYS BE SLEEPY.JUST LIKE THE THIEF BAKILI MULUZI, IF IT WAS NOT FOR TRIBALISM AND REGIONALISM MENTALITY PETER SHOULD NOT HAVE BEEN A HEAD OF STATE.HONESTLY SPEAKING, PETER IS NOT INSPIRING, DOES NOT GIVE HOPE AT ALL THAT HE CAN CONVINCE OUR DONORS WHO ARE KEY TO TURN AROUND OUR ECONOMY IN THE SHORT TERM. PETER HAS SURROUNDED HIMSELF WITH THE WELL KNOWN THIEVES WITH LONG HANDS AS FAR AS PUBLIC FUNDS ARE CONCERNED!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!SIX MONTHS AFTER ASSUMING POWER, INFLATION RATES.INTEREST RATES AND EXCHANGE RATES HAVE ALL WORSENED BECAUSE HE HAS LITERALLY DONE NOTHING POSITIVE TO CHANGE THE ECONOMY.ALL THAT PETER HAS DONE IS TO ENGAGE INTO ANOTHER GEAR TOWARDS THE PROMOTION OF THE LOMWELIZATION POLICY STARTED BY HIS ECCENTRIC LATE BROTHER, BINGU WA MUTHALIKA.

  6. But do you know that University also lacks good leadership? Entry exam not fair to others. It does not play a level field for those in town and villages. Remove it completely. MSCE is a good yard stick for entrance to the University.

  7. Bwana Happy Kayuni ndimakupatsani ulemu koma apa simukuyenelanso kulandira ulemu sure! Iwe Associate ukupangira chipongwe Professor APM? Ukuwona ngati uli mu class room ukuphunzitsa tiana eti? 11. Atumbuka see that u r becoming more and more unpopular because u criticise behind hate-sentiments on anything done by a Southerner. If u are intelligent why can’t u quit a salaried employment and become an Einstein of this date? JB will not run this country again. ..zakwana zomwe mwadya kalezo pa cash gate.

  12. Peter Mutharika must call for new presidential elections to reconfirm his mandate. But first we must amend the constitution for the winner to get 50+% votes in order to win the Presidency. Remember over 60% of the voters did not want him.

  13. Kayuni, nzako wakhalapo Principal wa pa university ndipo pano ndi President, basi iwe kungozuka mamawa nkumati ameneyu ndapatsa F. Kodi atumbuka munakhala bwanji? Mukatelo mumati mwantchuka, mbuzi za anhu

  14. Before I opened the article I was already 100% sure that this proff must be from the north kkkk. poor northerners you wont get anywhere with this behavior.

  15. Check the originality of this Kayuni you will notice that he might be coming from the same region where the heads of the CSOs organising the Demos are coming from. Don’t mind him.

  16. Kayuni’

Osatekeseka ndi anthu olepherawa, ife anthu anu tilipo nga nga nga kuti dziko lathu la Malawi libwelere chikale the warm Heart of Afrika.

  20. I thought the so called university professor was going to answer pertinent questions associated with the strikes like; whether or not the demands made by the striking parties like the judiciary are reasonable or not given the current economic situation? How would other sectors of the economy be affected if the demands would be met? where from the different sectors of the economy should such monies came from? At the same time in line with the principles of evidenced-based debate he also would have appreciate the fact that cashgate and its effects should be considered as part and parcel of the current economic context of Malawi.
I can sense some prejudice from his scoring methods because of OTHER REASONS KNOWN TO HIMSELF and discovered/detected by those who are able to read between lines.

  21. It’s a shame that this professor is taking part in just hating for the sake of hating I thought he was suppose to help not just criticise

  22. ana a school ku chancol akupasani grade yanji pa maphunzitsidwe? Nanga mai kunyumba? Nanga kumwamba kwakupangani grade bwanji a prof?

  23. Useless professors from unima. What papers or research have u published in ur name ? So what are ur suggestions? So criticisms without any solutions no wonder ur unima can’t be ranked on global or Africa platform. Do u know how many papers munthalika published when he was professor just Google but for u I tried there is nothing in ur name .

  26. When I read the heading, the first thing that came to mind is ‘wooow this so called must hv come wt brilliat ideas for APM’ having faulted hm for poor leadership. I ws very furious to read the article n grasp his brilliat points. when I scrolled down n read about hw ‘poor’ APM is failing to deal wt judicial strike, I smile coz I thought the so called professor has answers to this impasse… To my surprise and disatisfaction, the so called professor doesn’t gv any professorial ideas on hw best poor APM shud hv executed his leadership roles for him to get GPA of 4.00.. Poor Professor. it wud hv bn better had u refrained from grading APM…

  27. MAY GOD ALMIGHTY SHOWER HIS MERCIES AND GRACE ON THIS COUNTRY ( MALAWI ) FOR THE SAKE OF OUR SONS DAUGHTERS AND GRAND CHILDREN ( PRAYERS )

  28. Kayuni president 2019 Boma. The court strike and ACB offices are waiting for you when you take over from APM.

  29. To be educated is one thing, to be civilized is another!! This Kayuni fella is educated but he is not civilized as he is a fool! How can he say judicial staff are important taking into consideration the work they do?? They are the worst performers in this country! Why do you exaggerate & overrate their importance & significance amongst us? Village chiefs are far much better, more accurate & time bound in their cases handling than these so called learned judges! Salary harmonization is the way to go inu a boma osati zoti munthu azichita kukuuzani malipiro amene akufuna. Chamba, chiyani??

  30. I have read all the comments above and come to conclusion that the northerners are supporting this Kayuni semi-educated associate professor while those from the centre and south are against him. My plea with the President is that don’t dare succumb to the judicial demands! This Kayuni dude is supporting the judicial salary increase simply because most of the staff there are from the north. Imeneyo siigwira!!!

  31. People who have never worked under any company or institution do not understand the term “condition of service” hence the name calling of judicial staff u can’t go on the same salaries wen your currency depreciate n inflation has risen. Other dunderheads suggest that government should fire striking. For your own information who thinks like that it is very easy to hire someone than to fire in any democratic dispensation and no one can be fired for exercising his /her rights of withholding labour for requests and demands not met or honoured.

  32. A president athu ngopanda chikoka. Angoti phee. Problems cannot be resolved by themselves. Late Bingu was the best pres. ever malawi had. He could always talk wth authority-timukumbukila

  33. When will malawians learn to at iss ues from realistic view? The prof. Has not said Mutharika should have increased the demanded tachs but should have responded with clear urgency and maturity as a number 1 citizen. Here ur busy judging Prof. Kayuni from tumbuka perpective. How will u then prove to us that ur lomwe is better? Stop this! Lets start looking at issues with sober minds and eyes!

  34. Akayuni tell us what the president is suppose to do.zamanyi basi, atumbuka munakhala bwanji always fault finding.but osapeleka ma solutions.

  35. l think what most of we malawians are speaking bad of the president 1 day WE SHALL ALL BE SHOCKED REMEMBER BAD BINNING GOOD ENDING, good beginning bad ending
    REMEMBER JB.

  36. Enough of pointing fingers at our leader, you are no good to us! If you have better solutions than help the leader by giving your views to better the situation. Don’t point at him, he has another 4 and half years to lead us, you cannot fail a student in the first 6 months of university when he has a D year course. Pathetic professor!!

  37. The prof is right. This man is a complete failure. In fact the truth is that DPP is a party full of failures. The late Bingu took this country to the dogs and this Peter seems to be on the same path and apparently its going to be worse this time around.

  38. agalu inu profesara wayankhula bwino, there z a context of conflict resolution. It doesnt mean what the juduciary demands de govt must easily bow, no but dialogue. Panopa pres waalhomweyu akuti ife amalawi titengere phunziro la muhamad, nonsense ife Ambuye Yesu basi

  39. You must be ashamed of yourself. All this coz got is not succumbing to your unrealistic salary increases. Please nyasa stop giving platforms to these theoretical lecturers. And we malawians, what’s wrong with us. Many of us have a problem and not being level headed, always political and want to fight this govt. Please stop this negative energy and move on for this nation to grow.

  40. Iwe dyabulosi, ndiwe chitsiru ,inu achewa don’t you know that you are very short sighted people even when things are going worse you don’t see, you realize very late after northerners have already critised, without northerners everything in this country would have been going under the word “yes, yes bwana without saying NO.

  41. Running a gvt is not like za bodza zanu za theory prof opusa iwe this is not an assignment ask Rinald Mangani. Usadzayabkhukensi zopusa zakozo

  42. lets wait and see, what government will do on strikes, kundende ndiye kwadzaza please Mr President find a solution.

  43. It seems that some Malawians do not know that the state president has no power to determine Salaries and conditions of service of Judicial Officers. If Mutharika is trying to determine salaries and conditions of service of Judicial officers then Mutharika is violating the constitution. Read Attorney General’s advice. That power belongs to the National Assembly as expressly provided for in the Constitution.

  44. I wouldn’t even give Peter an “F”. I would give him a “Z” for “Zzzz. …” (snoring).

  45. I have never seen an empty headed prof like this chindere kayuni. Why doesn’t he offer suggestions or solutions to the problems? Atumbuka pakamwa too much that’s why they fail to unite and sustain even a single political party in the dead north.

  46. Kodi atumbuka bwanji? Musiyeni president alamulire mwachifatse!

By the way, when are you going to complete your secession?

  47. Ngati munthu amalephera kuthetsa conflict ali minister of education, just one ministry, so you think can handle conflict as big as this? Ndakaika kwambili. Bolaniso a late brother. Zinazi mbola zenizeni

  48. Most of the commentors on this subject seem not to understand the writer. Really when you analyise the current governance issues do you see the light at the end of the tunnel? Only myopic and mediocritic substances will doubt the assessment of leadership style. Whether be it from a Tumbuka or not, call a spade a spade. The effect of such governancy does only affect Tumbukas but it is for us all. Do not tribalise the true evidence.

  49. the F is for your failure to differenciate the country’s condition when your jb took over and the time APM started.Munazolowera kumva, azungu andiuza kuti.Fotsek.Mind you an empty tin makes alot of noise.Musayese potchukira.Pangani zoti ophunzira akutchukitseni

  50. Iwe mbolo ya mbuzi usamale dziko sayendetsa ngati kagalimoto kako kokutha kaja mbolo yako once again multiply by to the power root squre 2 = what pantumbo

  51. I was at Chancellor a couple of days ago – saw how delapidated the place has become. No research money and no innovation from these so called Professors. The place has professors based on 3/4 publications. Maybe we should work on our faults first before giving others an F.

  52. Sometimes do not just judge what your friend is trying to do bt let him do to his best and see the results.Prof wait for a period and see he knows(Peter) what is happening and how to cop up with the situation here in Malawi

  53. What I find disturbing in Malawi is the habit our learned people demonstrate. Nowhere on earth have I seen articles written in any medium carry the titles of the originator unless the write-up involves academic information. Why then is it only in Malawi that individuals would want to introduce themselves before the gist of the conversation/info in contention? No wonder people are associating your contributions to self intro for the next post after life as a university lecturer, analysts what my foot? By the way, how many learned people does the developed western world have and they in turn take a leading role in criticizing their own government unceremoniously? If anything those people do advise their leaders but in a matured and civilized manner. What is happening in Malawi just shows the mentality and immaturity of the nationals. Do you want to tell me that our neighbors (Zambia, Tanzania and Mozambique) do not have problems and/or educated people who can criticize their government/leadership? or they don’t have their own prophets who can prophesy the outcome of an activity about to take place in their own country but prophets from Malawi? who told you that Christians can only be found in Malawi, that other countries are composed of pagans/atheists? All these occurrences just depict the shallow mindedness of those seeking recognition. Some of you Professors need to travel in order to get a good grasp of things in real terms. HKB once said “being educated doesn’t only mean sitting in a learning institution but travelling to complement the whole” hence his practice of taking with him party ladies every time he went to the UK. I can bet my son who has attended schools abroad is well-off compared to some of these plonkers we are reading their nonsense on a daily basis. What a shame!!!!!!!!!!

  54. Kodi ma supporter a PP mwatani, Maluzi avuta, you praise J.B but your problems will not be solved as well as kunyoza A.P.M, let’s hold hands and change our mind set, let’s learn to priorities important things in our lives, money will never be enough as far as we are alive, let’s learn to invest in lifetime assets, a Malawi tidadziwa kuti anthu amapita ku nyanja ndiye every month end, mowa ndi azimai ndiye basi kukhala zovunikira zimatha ndarama izi mapeto ake kumangotukwana boma, pliz change yourself then things will also change around you.

  55. Not every professor is intelligent. Some people especially mbwenu mbwenus are professors by crooked means such as mzuzu kona and biased scholarships. Musatinyase ndi kutiopseza ndi upulofesa wakubawo. Mapulofesa anji omangowelenga maBuku aweni kulephela kulemba maBuku awo kuti amalawi titukuke. Mapulofesa anji opanda Masters and PHD?

  56. Cashgate looters are the ones winning as they are strategising on the next stage. Since you are a lecture thanks for giving him f, but I berg to differ as others will give him an A.

  57. akanakhala iwowo ndiye akanatani.za njeee! akuyesa lecturing…iyaa.ndidzikotu ili…si ma assessment.this is serious bisiness amwene

  58. Do not only judge others Prof. Offer solutions to the President/ country. The judiciary and ACB want very high increment rates yet Government can not afford. What would you do if you are a good Prof? Assist the nation with suggestions.
Malawians stop calling each other tribal names so that we promote unity.Show that we are all Malawians and God’s children.

  59. Professor wachiyani dull professors in MAlawi and most of them fail to retire for they failed to plan for their exit.

Those who feel they are very important and marketable must leave and work else where

If judges are requesting for vx how about DOctors who serves people’s lives and where will the money to pay them come from, judiciary is not realistica in its demands.

  65. I don’t understand how some dull and stupid people have access to such forums where we discuss serious matters affecting our country. All they see is where someone comes from. Does it mean if someone comes from the north he/she cannot criticize the President? Only praise him? Foolish people.

  66. I do agree it seems there is no leadership in this country. Leadership should start in solving the problems of the nation. But seven down the line the graph is fast sleping downward this is a clear sign that something fishy took place during the elections yes the nation was is not ready for another myopic leadership, we need a break

  67. surely he deserves worse than that. the problem with our president is that he thinks challenges will come to him for solutions.he is waiting for donors to come with solutions to our economic woes and yet he is just sitting idle at the SH.Joyce managed to sort out that mess within days because she was active and engaged dev.partners right at their backyard. man, stand up and make right moves. don’t fear travelling if means bringing solutions to our problems. meet donors, strikers and other partners before things get out of hand. will you handle it when all of us decide to go into the streets. wake up man.

  68. The name Kayuni sounds northerner so there is no wonder because many northeners are against the current administration they wanted PP thinking that JB is a wife to the northener so the one who was ruling this country was a northener what a shame, even you Kayuni if were president with current economic situation where donors witheld funds what could you have done? If you have plans why don’t share them to the president? Being a lecturer does not mean you are wise., you are just educated savege.

  69. YAP, THE DRIVER WHO IS THE PRESIDENT OF THIS COUNTRY IS IN DEEP SLUMBER AND SEEMS ALL HIS ASISTANT ARE NOT AWARE THAT HE IS SLEEPING, THAT IF HE IS TO MAKE AN ACCIDENT, THEY WILL ALL DIE, SO THUMB UP MR KAYUNI WHO IS JUST A PASSENGER 4 AWAKING MR DRIVER WHO IS THE PRESIDENT OF THIS CONTRY BY GIVING HIM GRADE ”F” SO ITS UP TO MR PRESIDENT TO SIT DOWN AND REVISED HIS BRAIN, VERY SAD 4 MY MALAWI!!!.

  71. “The judicial strike should have been given priority due to the role of the institution in consolidation of democratic governance in the country. Inability to respond immediately demonstrates lack of commitment to democratic governance”, end of quote! Some of the reasoning which our so called learned people say leaves a lot to be desired. What the learned Kayuni had said is opposite of the reality on the ground. If there is a useless, selfish, unproductive and ungrateful institution in this country, its Judicially. Government should go ahead with the implementation of the salary harmonization under the Vice President, Saulosi Chilima. Osagonjera, osanyengerera. Kaya tikuvanaaaa?????

  72. U mean he should please u 4 wat? If i ws hm i should’ve fire evry one on strike& employ new ones. Becoz it wil nt mek sense 2 make u pipo hapy @ month end insufficiency govt unable 2 pay on tym. Shit! Mkatopa siyani ntchito

  73. professor marking professor! APM is not wrong. Malawians are. Easily taken by titles without looking at abilities. APM did not hide his inabilities as he demonstrated as a minister. But the title “professor” did it for him plus external forces.

  74. He deserves an F+ , how the hell he became president, it can only happen in a country of idiots. Take for instance Obama, he was a local leader in Southside in Chicago before he went to become a Senator, David Cameron of UK is a career politician, closer to home, Mugabe was a freedom fighter, this Mutharika of ours never even paid tax in Malawi for 40 years yet today we allow such to be our president. Malawi is full of dull people.

  75. All what we are seeing is very stranger in our country, nobody would agree to this. Lets work together and build new Malawi otherwise we lose it.

  76. I agree with some dude who pointed out that these so-called professors are useless in Malawi. They say what a form two student can equally say. Come on! Assist your government with constructive ideas. Tell us what you can do for Malawi. Za ziiii! Professor my ass! I love professor Chisi who to me talks sense. Given a chance he can deliver. Osati kungokhala professor of critism…mxiiii. I can equally critise this government coz it’s all out there to see. Iyaaaaaaa!

  77. A President Pro. Peter Mutharika ngati mumawerenga nyasatimes imvani izi; don’t ever relent to these judicial fools’ demand. Don’t ever hike their salaries. If anything, deduct the salaries further so that whosoever don’t want the new salary should quit and look somewhere else. If I were in your shoes Your Excellency, I would increase salaries for 1. Health personnel. 2. Education staff. 3. Police men & women, in that order. These are the most hard working and dedicated Malawians, who serve their fellow Malawians without strings attached! Judicial staff are the most unproductive arm of govt in this country according to my performance appraisal analysis on them. Most of them spend their day in their offices doing absolutely nothing. Rely on bribes. If they feel they are super, let them open up their legal firms in town.

  78. Muthalika akuliza nkonono a Malawi akuvutika kumuuza kuti adzigwila ntchito akuchita ukali, waiwala kuti anazungulila dziko lonse la Malawi kuwauza anthu kuti amulembe ntchito ndipo adzawatumikila kuti miyoyo yawo isinthe nkukhala pa bwino, koma zonse zikuchitika nzakuti miyoyo ya a Malawi ili pa mavuto osasimbika ndipo tilibenso chiyembekezo mwa m’dalayu . Akuti professor zaziiiiiiii ,chindele chakufikapo.

  79. A Kayuni inu! Where were you during Joyce Banda’s era to only emerge as a prophet of wisdom this time around? Kuteroko mukonza kapansi kuti kamwamba katsike in readiness of your salary increament. Munalimbana ndi Bingu, pano mufunano Peter. Za ziiii!!!! A tumbuka inu, simudzatheka!!!!

  81. Mutharika is a dumbo. No brains. Cannot speak clearly. Mutharika is a corrupt bribes taking thief. Give him F is being kind. Mutharika is zero minus a failure imposed on Malawians by the ringing of votes carried out by Brian Bowler.

  82. Kayuni ameneyi kwao alibe ngakhale gowelo amagona mnyumba ya mlongo wake, akadakhala wamzeru akanamanga nyumba kwao ku karonga kuti akafa adzaikidwemo anthu omupelekeza

  83. Kayunis are from Chitipa/Karonga and are plenty. Nothing to question. Are you number 1(peter mathanyula) from Malawi yourself?

  84. Professori: What Do You Expect From A Person Who Failed To Manage A Ministry. The Academic Freedom Ran For Almost Eight Months While He Was Deeply Asleep. Further, He Took No Initiative To Bring The Agrieved Parties To A Round Table Discussion But Close Down Chanco For Such A Long Period. So, Is It Surprising To See A C B Closed? He Is Not Fit To Run A Country This Granny!!

    1. My friend, there are many kayunis in Malawi in Chitipa and also
Karonga!!! I even know one kayuni personally having been in the same class at university of malawi some years ago !!!
