US Catholic Cardinal calls on Malawi’s Banda: Assures of support
An American Cardinal of the Roman Catholic Church, Theodore E. McCarric, says there is need for the church to help President Joyce Banda in uplifting the welfare of Malawians.
His Eminence Mc Carrich, he most prominent Catholic clergyman in the United States, was speaking when he paid courtesy call to President Banda at State House in Lilongwe on Wednesday.
Cardinal Mc Carich says President Banda has taken a good path in involving all stakeholders in taking Malawi towards the right direction.
The clergyman said he is aware on the effort President Banda is making in addressing the needs of the less privileged and especially the girl child.
He also said he is aware that many Malawians will face serious food shortage this year and that the Catholic Church through the Catholic Relief Services will help to feed those that will be in need of food.
Cardinal Mc Carich, who was accompanied by Mrs Amy Rumano head of Catholic Services in Malawi, said the organization has set aside over one million dollars that will be used to procure food for those that need it.
In her remarks, President Banda thanked the Catholic Church for the support the church continues to render to her government.
President Banda hailed the Catholic Church especially on the role the church played during the transition period.
“I shall forever be grateful to the Catholic Church for all it has done to me and my family, I have also benefited a lot from the Catholic church through their education, as you are all aware I went to Providence Secondary School (a Catholic institution),” said President Banda.
President Banda also thanked the Catholic Church for their development programmes carried via numerous Catholic projects.
She said close to two million Malawians will face starvation this year and there is need to prepare on how to help those that will need food.
His Eminence Cardinal Mc Carrich was also accompanied by Monsignor Bert Van Megen, Vatican Representative to Malawi and Father George Buleya, Secretary General for the Episcopal Conference of Malawi.
