‘Use new sanitation-friendly toilets for good health’
Residents of Bangwe Township, one of the cholera prone areas in Blantyre were on Saturday persuaded on the need to build modern latrines that are environmental friendly.
This was said during the mobile- sensitization meeting at Bangwe Market conducted by Sanitation Solutions, a private company specializing in constructing modern latrines that do not give out bad smell and do not have flies in them.
“The company has established businesses that are specializing in constructing modern latrines. Some of these latrines can be used to harvest manure for our gardens, some can be manually flushed and can be emptied when full.”Victor Kamwendo, a member of the sensitization team said.

The latrines are categorized into three types. Skyloo latrine is constructed by building two brick and rendered vaults above ground level which act as pits. One vault is used at a time while the contents of the other vault are left to get matured into manure. The stuff can then be applied in gardens as manure.
The VIP is another type of latrine. This latrine is a pit with a vent pipe added to the pit which reduces fly nuisances and the bad smell.
The third latrine is called ‘Pour flush latrine’. A pour-flush latrine is like a regular flush toilet, except that the water does not come from the cistern above. Instead water is poured in by the user.
Currently, the program is being implemented in Ndirande, Machinjiri, Ntopwa ,Manyowe , Nancholi and Kachere among other areas.
