Vuwa booed off-stage for politicking at gospel show

Malawi’s Minister of Sports, Youth, Development and Culture,  Symon Vuwa Kaunda,  made a fool of himself on Sunday when he was forced to cut his speech short and booed out of stage following his attempts to bring politics to a gospel show in Lilongwe by slotting in President Bingu wa Mutharika’s name in his speech.

Vuwa Kaunda turned himself into a comedian during the show at Sheaffer Conference Hall where gospel artist Mirriam Kuseni was launching her album.

Firstly the Minister was booed and forced to cut his speech short and eventually chanted off-stage when during his speech he mentioned President Mutharika as the one who had made it possible to have the show take place.

Vuwa Kaunda; Embarrassed

“I am happy to be here. This event has been possible because of the wise and dynamic leadership of Ngwazi Professor Bingu wa Mutharka,” said Kaunda, who was guest of honour at the launch of the album.

Vuwa Kaunda’s statement angered the audience who most of them were overheard arguing that there was no connection between the show and the president.

Sizandale izi anthu oipa inu mwawononga dziko ndikuzuza mtundu wa Malawi. Mulungu adzakulangani,” one person was heard shouting with other booing “uuuuuuuuuuuuuuu! Achoke! Achoke!

Some audience went on to shout words like, “Tidzawonana pamtengo wa kachere in 2014 ngati mudzatizuzeso m’mene mukuchitira panomu,”

As the minister made attempts to continue with his speech amidst the boos the gathering went further chanting and calling for his immediate leave of the stage. He succumbed to the call and indeed left the stage and went back to his seat.

Not to be outdone by the angry gospel lover Vuwa Kaunda was on stage again to announce a gift of K250,000 from the President’s brother Peter – heir apparent.

He started nicely with no reaction from the audience until he made attempts to mention the President again. The audience went mad again and booed him until he was forced to surrender and leave the podium without finishing his speech.

With all resilient the Minister went back to his seat and continued watching the show as if nothing happened.

At the end of the show he refused to take any questions and explain his predicament to journalists present.

Kuseni is wife to former MCP legislator for Dowa east Frank Kuseni who just before the 2009 elections defected to the ruling DPP but eventually lost in the ruling party’s primaries to musician Bauleni  Mannah of the Dr Crowd fame.
