Why is sugar scarce and why is it too expensive? CDEDI wants answers from Govt

The Centre for Democracy and Economic Development Initiatives (CDEDI) has urged the ministry of trade and industry and Illovo Sugar Company to tell Malawians the cause of the sugar scarcity in the country.

Addressing Journalists this morning in Lilongwe CDEDI executive director Sylvester Namiwa says the situation is dire, resulting in the rationing of the commodity and the surging prices which have gone as high as K2,750 per 1 kilogram packet of sugar in some parts of the country.

Namiwa claims that the situation is due to failure by the ministry of trade to issue import licenses on time to interested business persons since sugar is a protected commodity according to the Control of Goods Act of 2018.

Meanwhile, the organisation has put forward 4 demands to the minister of trade Sosten Gwengwe some of which include telling the nation when will Illovo Sugar Company notify the government about the impending sugar crisis.
