Woman sexually assaulted, killed: Malawi Police arrest suspect
Police in Kasungu are keeping in custody Mvano John for allegedly raping a 28-year-old woman before strangling her to death.
The woman –name shielded – comes from Chikula Village, T/A Simlemba in Kasungu District.
Kasungu Police Deputy Spokesperson, Burton Mathewe, told Nyasa Times, the suspect went to the deceased house last Saturday at around 21:00hrs with intent to rape her after realising that her husband was away.
“He broke into the house and grabbed her but the deceased managed to escape into a maize field. John followed her there and captured her before raping her. He later strangled her to death and when neighbours came to rescue her, the suspect had already gone,” said Mathewe.
John, who hails from Chimwendo Village, T/A Chakhaza in Dowa, was arrested after police found some leads and will appear before court soon to answer murder charges.
In another development, a 39-year-old man has been found dead at Katenje Trading Centre in the district.
Police have identified the deceased as James Mwisama of Nkhulambe Village, T/A Nazombe, in Phalombe.
It is believed that last Saturday, the deceased and his friend Luciano went to the trading centre to drink beer but later his friend bade him farewell and left for home.
“The following morning [Sunday] Mwisama’s body was found within the trading center. Postmortem revealed that he died due to severe bleeding after being hit by a blunt object,” said Mathewe.
The deputy police spokesperson said nobody has since been arrested but investigations were still underway.
