Yoneco challenges Chanco students to desist from risky behaviours to prevent HIV infection

Zomba based non -governmental organization, Youth net and counseling (Yoneco) has   urged students from University of Malawi’s Chancellor College to stay away from behaviors that may put them at risk of contracting HIV and AIDS.

Yoneco Executive Director Macbain Mkandawire made the remarks on Friday at Chancellor College in Zomba during Social weekend where among others students crowned Innocentio Neulo and Tinashe Simakweli as Mr. and Miss Chanco Respectively.

.Mkandawire said as the organization that puts the walfare of the youth at heart it is always saddened to hear reports that a lot of students in the institutions of High learning are infected with HIV a thing which can be avoided if proper measures are followed.

“It is always heart breaking to hear that HIV prevalence rate is so high among college students across the country.  Therefore as an organization we are responding by taking our services close to the students so that they can access them right from their fingertips. Our wish is to see students realize their desired future.

With funding from Global fund through action Aid under the investing impact in HIV and TB Project, During the social weekend Yoneco had time to offer HIV testing and counseling (HTC) services to Chancellor College students and also made distribution of condoms.

Mkandawire also added that students should always practice safe sex and priotize their education in their daily activities.

“Student should refrain from unprotected sex but rather use condoms. Condom use is christened as one of Malawi’s key preventive method as Malawi eyes achieving 90:90:90”He said

The newly crowned beauty queen said she is glad to have carried the day and promised to use her new position to champion education among girls and to be an ambassador in the fight against HIV and AIDS.

“I feel so happy to be the 2017 Miss Chanco and I thank God for making it possible. I promise to champion girl education and be in the forefront in the fight against HIV and AIDS as I raise the Chanco flag,”

Innocentio Neulo is a Bachelor of Arts communication and cultural studies student while Tinashe Simakweli is pursuing philosophy.

Among other artists Yoneco brought in Braze and Sir. Patricks to spice up Chanco Social weekend.
