Sungani Mandala

Mandala replaces Chrighton Chimombo who was moved in December   to the National Planning Commission after holding the position in an acting capacity.

The new Accountant General, who is expected to report for duties on Monday April 15 2019,  said he is going into a position which has challenges but ready to make “changes” .

Mandala has been rising in ranks of civil service having joined at Machinga District health office in 2001 straight after graduating from school. He has worked in various ministries including as chief accountant in the Ministry of Finance, deputy director of Finance, assistant accountant general and as project manager of Integrated Financial Management Information System (Ifmis) in 2014 .

He holds a bachelor of business administration from University of Malawi’s Polytechnic College. Mandala also holds  master’s  of business administration from the University of Bradford in West Yorkshire, England.

In terms of hierarchy in the civil service, the Accountant General is at the level of principal secretary (PS).

All those qualified accountants, and Peter Mutharika, it have pleased the professor to appoint an unqualified personnel for the position of Accountant General. Sungani Mandala has been serving as a public Accountant from 2001. Our constitutions and Public Finance Management Act (2003) does not prohibit anyone from being appointed as an Accountant General . It’s a prerogative of the president to appoint any one . Just wait and watch . This young man will deliver beyond everyone’s expectations.
