Zomba coffin workshop owner arrested for possessing medical items

Owner of Tsamilani Coffin Workshop in Zomba is in police custody for allegedly possessing assorted medical items, police have confirmed.

Eastern Region Police spokesperson Thomeck Nyaude identified the suspect as Prince Kaphuka (37) who was arrested on New Year’s Eve in the city.

Nyaude said the suspect was found with five cartons of perineal cushion; five boxes of hypoallergenic silk tape; 18 surgical wraps, three pairs of clutches and eight toilet cisterns.

He said the items were hidden inside a hawker close to his shop near Matawale Township in Zomba.

Meanwhile, the police are working with the Zomba District Health office to establish the value of the items. Nyaude said the suspect will appear before court soon to answer charges of being found with items suspected to have been stolen.

Cases of stolen medical items and drugs have dominated in most of the districts in the Eastern part of Malawi for the better part of the year 2012.

The suspect is from Mangulu Village, TA Liwonde in Machinga
