Basketball followers in Zomba will have something to feast their eyes on when an Invitational Basketball tournament rolls into action early August.
The two-day tournament, which has been slated for Chancellor College sports complex, has drawn teams from Zomba, Blantyre and Lilongwe,
according to one of the organizers Hope Chisamanga.
He said the aim of the tournament is to bring back basketball action in the old capital.
“You may recall that the trophy we had for senior teams was the Chanco Shield way back in the 1990s. So we want people to appreciate
basketball skills and also the players to enjoy playing the game,” he said.
Chisamanga added that so far teams such as Chanco Hawks and Magang’a from Zomba, Lox360, Mikoko, Bricks, Highfliers, Crazy Warriors and
Poly Bobcats from Blantyre have confirmed their participation in the tournament. Lilongwe’s Cookers and Central Knights will complete the line-up to make it a ten-team tournament.
He said the winners of the tournament will cart home K50 000 plus medals and a trophy whereas the second-placed team will receive K30
000. Third-placed team will pocket K20 000.
He promised youth basketball teams in Zomba to get prepared for another community basketball tournament called Hood versus Hood once
the 2014 Malawi School Certificate of Education (MSCE) examination is over.
