Zomba United booted out of Carlsberg Cup: Last year’s finalists
Last year’s Carlsberg cup finalists Zomba United have been booted out of the competition in the second round of the regional phase after losing 3-1 on post match penalties to Ndirande Icons.
Zomba United, who lost to Bullets 2-0 in last year’s final, were knocked out after a one-all tie in regulation time and Icons won the shutout to qualify for the national draw.
United cruised to the second round after beating Zomba Research 2-1 while Ndirande Icons who have proved to be a sensational team of the completion booted out Prison United on penalty shoot-outs.
Ndirande Icons will represent the South in the national draw alonngside Max Bullets who beat Green Hawks 5-0 and Changalume Barracks who beat Nyasa United 2-0.
Silver Reserve Youth became the first team in the Central Region side to qualify for the National draw after beating Kasungu Police 2-0.
The other two places for the Cental Region will be decided today as Civo Reserves face Master Security while Support Battalion take on Black Eagles.
In the North, former Super League side Karonga United needed post match penalties to book a place in the National phase with a 4-3 win over Rumphi Medicals.
They are joined by OPC FC who had a walkover after Chalaghala forfeited points after reporting late for the match.
Chirumba Barracks were the first team to qualify for the national phase from the Northern Region after beating after beating Kaporo Stars 1-0.
Carlsberg Cup was relaunched this year with the same K30 million sponsorship from Carslberg Malawi Breweries.
