11 year-old girl drowns in Nkhotakota

A 11-year-old girl has died after drowning in a river in Nkhotakota district, police have confirmed.

The deceased has been identified as Efiness Lawless a standard 3 pupil at Phakwe Primary School, and she drowned on Sunday 2 October, 2016 in Msinje Okumbaimbe village in the district.

According to police, the girl had gone to the river with her friends to dig up clay soil as ordered by their teachers at school. While extracting the soil, the deceased slipped and drowned into the river.

Efforts to rescue her proved futile. Medical postmortem revealed she died due to suffocation.

The deceased hailed from Maila village, T/A Mwadzama in the district.
