7 cops injured as Police, vendors clash in Karonga demos: Roadblock  set on fire

Irate protesters in Karonga have battled with police, setting on fire a roadblock at Rukuru as traders protested against Malawi Revenue Authority (MRA) roadblocks in the district.

Some Karonga residents clashed with police at Rukuru Roadblock along the Karonga-Songwe Road in northern Malawi

The protesters said they took the drastic action to burn the Rukuru roadblock and chase away police officers manning it because of the failure by MRA officials to look into their grievnces which they had presented to them two weeks ago.

Earlier, a move by villagers from Mwanjawala tried in vain to stop their friends from proceeding with their decision to remove the road block.

Karonga business community say there are just numerous MRA roadblock blocks that are collecting money from cross-border traders on M1 road between Songwe border and Chilumba and they  want Iponga MRA, Rukuru Police, Ipyana Police and Chilumba MRA road blocks removed.

According to the group’s chairperson Goodwin Ghambi, they decided to go to the street after  MRA and police failed to respond to their concerns when they gave the tax-collecting body  three weeks to address them.

The ugly scenes started at Rukuru road block where there were  running battles between police and demonstrators who overpowered the police and snatched four riffles and tear gass carnisters, injuring seven police officers in the process.

The cops were rushed to Karonga District Hospital but they  had been treated as out- patients.

Karonga Police Station officer in-charge assistant commissioner Sam Nkhwazi confirmed the police officers were severely injured .

We must also rise against carbon tax. Carbon tax should be paid by car manufacturers or sellers. This is just one way of legitimizing theft of public money.

Yah I think that is right but the only problem they have done is to beat Police officers but not removing MRA roadblock , get rid of these MRA roadblock, Northerners pay Taxes but not given the same share of development.

Let Southerners pay their own Tax to develop the Lhomwe Belt. You get money from the North and u develop Southern region so we won’t tolerate it. U suppress Northerners who also contribute alot to Account number 1. So we better not pay Tax .

This is not a surprise to me, Malawi Police sold its power and proffesionalism to corruption and politics it is the only branch of executive mostly controlled by politicians, it has DAUSI who is ex MYP man as head of the ministry and a lot of blue cadets do put on police uniform and do all sorts of problem anthu atopa ndi police. Ziphuphu ndie namba one. Awachita bwino

Signs that Malawians are angry, fraud and corruption is annoyingly the order of the day at MRA at a time when business people from whom tax money is collected are struggling. The very tax money collected from all corners of Malawi, some greedy ones think it is their Muthalika money.Musovenge.

We don’t entertain violence but it is painful when people are suffering and the government is looting money from poor people and share it to their political loyal friends and get rich overnight. If I were the people in Karonga, I would demolish all those so called MRA road blocks and make sure that Vuwa should go and squeezed himself in Thyolo. He is an agent of evil in the North used by DPP in buying MPs for his personal benefit.
