70 year old jailed 10 years for defiling and impregnating grand daughter

A 70 year old granny will spend the next 10 years in jail after being found guilty of defiling and imprignating his 14 tear old grand
daughter.

State Prosecutor Sergeant Christopher Nyirongo told the court that in May this year, Ngozo defiled the girl after the wife had gone to the village.

“During the same night that the wife left home, Mr. Philipo Ngozo sneaked into the room of the victim who is also embicile and defiled her” said Sergeant Nyirongo.

It was revealed that the mother became suspicious with the way the child was behaving and in August is when she noticed some changes on the girl who upon being questioned, she narrated the whole ordeal.

The matter was later reported to police who went on to arrest Ngozo.

Sergeant Nyirongo pleaded with the court to hand Ngozo a stiffpunishment to deter other would be offenders since it has become a
common trend for old people to sleep with minors in Balaka.

On his part during mitigation, Ngozo pleaded for leniency saying he isa bread winner.

He also said the unborn child will need his care and support hence the need for uncustodial sentence.

But before passing the judgement, Magistrate Felix Mandala concured with Sergeant Nyirongo that people like Ngozo need to be handed out stiffer punishment.

Mandala said the pregnancy also aggraveted the crime.

He therefore slapped Ngozo with a 10 year sentence.
