Police in Lilongwe have arrested an 81 year old man for being suspected of defiling a six year old girl.
Lilongwe Police Model Station Public Relations Officer Ramsey Mushani said the suspect who is identified as Bashoni Jumbe is a watchman at one of the Indian shops in the city of Lilongwe,
“Jumbe was arrested on July 16 during the morning hours as he was caught red handed defiling the girl (name withheld) by a fellow guard who look after the premises that Jumbe was being housed at his master’s yard in Kaphiri location along M1 road to Blantyre,” said Mushani.
According to Mushani upon knocking off from his work the suspect called the victim and her two other friends to his place. He told them to help him prepare nsima for his breakfast, but the suspect prepared it on his own and only invited them (the girls) to eat with 2him.
After taking the meal, the victim’s two friends left leaving her behind with the suspect. The suspect took advantage to defile the girl.
By then, the victim’s parents were out of their home which is only some meters away from the suspect’s shelter.
Mushani further said police are still investigating the matter.
“Meanwhile, police is vigorously pursuing investigations and upon completion the suspect will appear in court to answer a charge of defilement which is contrary to section 138 of the penal code,” he said.
Jumbe hails from Chaluma village Traditional Authority Kalumbu in Lilongwe district. If one is found guilty of defilement by the court, it attracts a maximum sentence of life imprisonment. The suspect is still in police custody.
