He died on December 24 at Mwaiwathu Private Hospital in Blantyre.

Chitonya’s untimely death shocked a lot of individuals as well as organizations including Malawi’s media.

Blantyre Press Club (BPC) expressed deep shock over the death of Chitonya, saying he was a true partner and sponsor of the Club.

In November this year, the Company supported and provided the Club with a premier coach to transport its members to its annual general meeting in Mangochi.

“We have lost a true partner and sponsor of the Club. Premier buses gave us a bus and was more than willing to give us a bus to our annual retreat at Mandevu farm next week. His death is a blow to the media fraternity, especially to Blantyre Press Club.

“Mr Chitonya was always ready to work with the media, regardless of which media house the reporter comes from.  As a club, we believe business virus will emulate the example set by Mr Chitonya who would not look at who to support in fulfilling its corporate social responsibility,” said BPC President Blessings Kanache in a statement.

Former broadcaster Mike Anold Mbalale (now a teacher at HHI Seconday School) said late Chitonya was a “selfless man” and also a “pillar at Blantyre Baptist Church”.

  5. Death is part of human journey none of us are spared. This has been one hell of the Christmas in our clan as we recently lost our eldest member, my grany who died in the first week of December. To make matters worse, I couldn’t attend the funeral due to circumstances beyond my control.

From Christmas day we have been privileged attend Church ceremony and I received spiritual upliftment by the soul touching gospel by our pastor. I wish the bereaved family (Chitonya family) could receive similar blessing to comfort them and to grant them the spiritual healing in this difficult time. Amen.

I always wonder why we people find comfort in the untrue phrase “untimely death.”

Is death untimely when a rich man dies but timely when a poor man dies? Or it is untimely when the young or the unborn die yet timely when the old die? I just don’t get it!

Death is never untimely. If it comes, it is timely whether you are young or old; rich or poor; otherwise it doesn’t come.

In perspective: You can be run over by a truck and not die, if the time for you to die is not come. Conversely, you can have a head-on collision with a mosquito, or kuphunthwa nkugwa, and die, if the time for you to die is come. Death is never untimely.

As such all of us young or old, rich or poor just need to be ready coz death shall meet us at the right time, regardless. Its important to remember . . .

  10. The WILL of God remains a mystery. Premium Bus Service eased transport hiccups in Malawi and provided good competition to the Coachline Service which was a plus for the passenger. Hopefully the company remains in the right hands. RIP Mr Chitonya!!
