Sheriffs pounce on Malawi pollster, seize vehicles
Malawi Electoral Commission (MEC) has suffered both financial and material loss and embarrassment after sheriffs seized three vehicles due to a K18 million debt.
Judiciary spokesman Mlenga Mvula confirmed the sheriffs rushed to Malawi Electoral Commission (MEC) offices in Blantyre where they have seized the vehicles.
He said MEC owes a number of firms money including Universal Trading and Trans World Radio.
“The sheriffs were executing a warrant issued by the High Court,” said Mvula, a move that has done a big blow to MEC whose commissioners and officers have been embroiled in mismanagement of money.
President Peter Mutharika told MEC officials a few months ago to be prudent with public money and be transparent and accountable.
The seizure of the property also comes at a time when government departments are facing huge budget cuts due to financial problems rocking the government.
MEC spokesperson Sangwani Mwafulirwa was not available for comment.

Anabetha mwayankhula bwino. How can government dept embarrass another department? Why is the Judiciary so much in pains with MEC? Is it because most of them feel the Chair overtook them while they were busy snoring? No MEC Commissioner will have a tainted picture. Viva MEC Commissioners! Shame Judiciary!
kkkkkkk even the ones managing the commission too should be sheriffed they nothing to offer
I wish more should happen to this useless corrupt MEC , Malawi is suffering because of your corruption , you like money than Malawi as a nation.
Very interesting development.
MEC is a fully funded Govt agency .
It is failing to pay ngongole dating as far back as 2009 elections.
Another Govt funded institution called the judiciary has sent it’s sheriff to impound property of a fellow public institution.
Meanwhile a third government funded institution by the name of MBC, tipped by the judiciary rushed to MEC to cover and break the story.
And Khamula thinks MEC officials should be embarrassed. Are you serious. Should anyone be embarrassed on behalf of Malawi Govt. What strange logic!
