Wizards stun Blue Eagles in Malawi Carlsberg Cup: Misinde scores brace
Hendrix Misinde scored a brace as Wizards FC stunned Blue Eagles 2-1 in the Carlsberg Cup round of 32 at the SureStream stadium in Chilomoni, Blantyre.
Eagles straight from their victory over Mighty Be Forward Wanderers in the TNM Super League looked a better team in the opening minutes of the game and no wonder they scored first with Gilbert Chirwa connecting a loose ball from Victor Nyirenda.
After scoring first, the Lilongwe based police team became complacent at the back and Misinde got the equaliser for Wizards after the half hour mark. The scores remained the same up to half time.
Soon after recess, the rookies squandered a golden oportunity to score a second goal but Misinde fluffed his weak shot over the bar.
However, the young diminutive Misinde punished Eagles on his second attempt to score the winning goal with few minutes left before the end of regulation time.
It was 2-1 the final result in favor of Wizards as they eased through to the round of 16 of the Carlsberg Cup where they will meet Mzuzu United.
After the game, Wizards F.C Technical Director Peter Mponda told Nyasa Times that it was a relief after a poor start in the league.
“It’s a big relief to my lads. They deserve to be in the next round of this competition especially with the level of fitness they are in at the moment. I think we can have a motivation now after going though a series of poor results,” said Mponda.
In his remarks, Blue Eagles Assistant Coach Wilson Chidati admitted Wizards were a better team on the day.
“My troops became too complacent after scoring. I think they undermined Wizards and we got punished for that. Anyway, that part of football and we wish Wizards better life in the next level of the competition,” said Chidati.
Blue Eagles next assignment is a league meeting with Bullets F.C at Nankhaka ground on Sunday.
