North, Central West education division triumph in 2016 Airtel Rising Stars
Northern and Central West Education Division are champions for the 2016 Airtel Rising Stars men’s and women’s football categories respectively.
The two teams carted home K2 million each, after emerging finalists during derbies held at Mzuzu Stadium.
Northern Education Division boys beat South West Division 3 goals to 1, while Central West girls beat Northern Education Division 1-0.
South West were runners-up in the boys’ category while Central West came third. They went home with K1.5 million and K1.2 million respectively. They also got bronze medals.
In the girls’ category, Northern Division came second and Central East came third. They also got K1.5 million and K1.2 million respectively plus bronze medals.
In individual mentions, Muva Moyo was voted ‘Player of the Tournament’ in girls’ football while Samson Chiwona emerged top goal scorer.
Airtel Malawi marketing manager, Emmanuel Kasambara, said they are encouraged with talents they continue to unearth each year.
Kasambara said Airtel Malawi strives towards playing a leading role in growing and nurturing young talent through initiatives like Airtel Rising Stars.
“The passion that we’ve for the youth is evident in our financial allocation each year. This year alone we’ve over K79 million allocated towards Airtel Rising Stars,” said Kasambara.
Deputy Minister of Education, Vincent Ghambi, said it was a “wise” decision for Airtel to sponsor the tournament.
“Such initiatives bring about positive behaviour change amongst our young,” he said.
1 750 school teams participated in this year’s tournament, according to Airtel Malawi.
