Police attribute North Malawi fatal accidents to overspeeding, non observation of road signs
Malawi Police say the four fatal accidents in the north which have claimed four lives within a week is as a result of drivers overspeeding and non observation of road signs.
Northern region police deputy publicist Morris Chapola said the accidents were avoidable.
“We have now intensified traffic checks on the road, our traffic officers are checking speed limits and road worthy of vehicles plying on that road. We have put speed traps and breathlisers,” said Chapola.
The first accident happened when a speeding minibus killed a pedestrian near Mzuzu University then days later there was a four vehicle accident on the Chiweta, two accidents which happened ten minutes apart one of the vehicles involved a minibus that had Sunday School children on board and on Saturday a National Bus that had refugees on board from Karonga overturned killing its conductor on the spot.
At least 40 people were injured and admitted to Mzuzu Central Hospital and Chapola said those who are still in hospital are in stable condition.
