The items were bought under the government sponsored Local Development Fund (LDF) aimed at assisting construction works at Mwanje F.P School in the same District of Balaka.

Balaka Deputy Public Relations Officer (PRO) Sergeant Gerald Sumaili, identified the couple as Sautso Chipeya aged 37, wife Cecilia Amos aged 24 and the accomplice Maurice Busili aged 32.

Sumaili said the materials were stolen in September this year and that the police have only manage to recover the wire mesh.

“We arrested the three on 12th December 2016. Our findings revealed that they broke into a store room and stole the iron sheets at first before returning to stole the roll of the wire mesh,” Sumaili told Nyasa Times on Wednesday.

Sumaili said they recovered the wire mesh hidden at a house located at a distance of about 7 kilometers from the School.

“The funniest and surprising thing is that the couple with assistance from Busili had to cover a distance of seven kilometers by foot,” he said.

The three will appear before court soon to answer charges of theft.

Chipeya hails from Kaumphawi Village, T/A Nsamala in Balaka while the wife hails from Chiyembekezo Village, T/A Nsamala in the same district.

The accomplice Busili also hails from the same district and T/A but in Sosola Village.

The couple got married in December 2015.
