K-Bonnie returns with ‘52’ under new name ‘VIP to God’
Five years after releasing the critically acclaimed controversial song ‘Malawians are stupid’ which stirred debate on social media, K-Bonnie returns with another thought provoking song ‘52’.
Trading under a new moniker ‘VIP to God’, the artist described the song as non-partisan, saying ‘52’ is simply addressing the struggle after 52 years of independence in Malawi.
“Seeing the turmoil which Malawi is currently facing after 52 years of independence, I found it paramount to address the issues in a song. This is not my first time tackling issues of national interest. When I was a kid, I did the same in 2004’s ‘I was there’, 2006’s ‘More than 30 years’ and 2012’s ‘Malawians are stupid’.
He added: “Plus I was inspired by the fact that most Malawian rappers shun politics. This always gives me the drive. Hip Hop reflects what society is thinking, if you don’t want us to be vocal then rectify the problems that Malawians are facing.”
Commenting on his new name, K-Bonnie said the name might be new to some people but it has always been there since 2011.
“Back in high school my fellow students considered my behaviour as ‘weird’. One of my classmates told me that I would either end up dead or in jail. He was surprised to see me alive. Surprisingly, this happened in 2014 but I have been using ‘VIP TO GOD’ as my twitter handle since 2011.
“And also after considering what I have gone through in my life, fighting my alcohol and drug addiction, I concluded that I am really a Very Important Person to God (VIP TO GOD),” he said.
In the song, the artist tackles the unsolved murder cases of Chasowa and Njauju, homosexuality, deflection of Kwacha, cashgate and the trending Zambia-Malawi maize scandal.
