Malawi Rural Electrification Programme Phase 8 to cost K8bn – Minister Msaka
Minister of Natural Resources, Energy and Mining Bright Msaka has disclosed that Malawi Rural Electrification Programme (Marep) Phase 8 will cost K8 billion.
Under Marep seven, government is targeting more rular centres throughout the country in addition to 137 which were targetted in Phase 7.
“Government is determined and committed that Malawians should have electricity in rural and urban centre in the country,” said Msaka.
The Minister was speaking when he received material for the project from Cullin Africa at Electricity Supply Corporation of Malawi (Escom) in Blantyre on Monday.
Msaka assured that Marep would reach more centres as the project advances.
‘We are increasing power generation in the country; already we have advertised for various energy sources. So, whoever, we will connect through Marep 8 will receive power,” Msaka said.
He said through the eighth phase, the government eyes to further broaden and increase both transmission and distribution network throughout the country.
Msaka said the project is likely to commence in July.
The project is set to extend to health facilities in the country following a motion which was moved in parliament by Dedza East member of Parliament (MP) Juliana Lunguzi (Malawi Congress Party-MCP).
Lunguzi said the development will attract health personnel to be deployed to rural health centres, thereby improving service delivery at district level.
Well contributed idea Lunguzi.
