Malawi Queens flop in Australia: Fast5 World Series

Even before they embarked for Melbourne, Australia for this year’s Fast5 World Series the Malawi Queens were back home already judged to under-perform.

Malawi Queens go down fighting in first three matcha of the world fast5  series

This followed the controversy that surrounded the ommission of star shooter Mwawi Kumwenda.

The decision was enforced by the Netball Association of Malawi (NAM) following Mwawi’s late reporting for camping.

Nevertheless, the team has fared poorly in the tournament so farhaving lost all their three opening matches on day 1 of the tournament.

They lost 34-21 to hosts Australia before losing to England 43-15 and finally Jamaica by 31 baskets to 24.

Their continental rivals South Africa are also having a nightmare having also lost all their opening three matches.

They lost to Jamaica 37-29, Newzealand 40-26 and England 31-24.

Meanwhile, Malawians through comments on social media are pushing the blame on NAM for leaving out Mwawi.

According to many, Mwawi’s inclusion could have brought positive results or reduce the goal defeceit in Queen’s defeats.

  1. My Queens . Failure does not determine your character, its how you respond to failure. You are world class Netball team, you have taught and beaten the best. Forget about the individually frustrated malawians because you are not. You are the Queens, each one of you. Sing the National Anthem with the commitment at heart of what it stands for. You are the best. Each one of you, do it for every loving malawian and for your sister Mwawi.

  2. NAM…… you have put our team into bad history….. Regard shuffle the organization leadership….. Kwachuluka ziazimayi zonyasa Mitima…… Please love your country by doing what’s best Osati zomwe MA hormone Anu afuna…

  3. Its not a matter of blaming NAM but team needs more skills, watched them and play very good but need skills.

  4. These losses are courtesy of Carlo Bapu. No need for more whinning here. She is damn responsible . Ugong’oli Carlo kusamva. #bringbackmwawi#

  5. Your decision was such stupid and you just got want deserved by dropping Mwawi.. I’m so disappointed

  6. South Africa also lost their 3 opening matches so if south Africa lost who are we kkkkkkkk NAM SG

  7. Mumatiyimira .Amene amakukondani asangalala nazo zotsatira zanuzo.Had it been I was the one I could have swallowed my pride

  8. thanks ladies for representing is.. all days are not sunday… moreover even south africa hard nightmare so competition was tough…. not bcz of so so so…

  9. It’s obvious…it was a pity watching them miss simple goals..the GS were too short compared with their rivals..mwayi couldd have done sommething…NAM ndi inu anthu odzitukumulanu..mumaona ngati mungatani?

  10. On lesson that NAM shud learn is that when u av a big name like Mwawi in ur team, they can sometimes get in ur nerves with their ego n u shud learn from what big football clubs like Real Madrid do with their big names like CR7… U dance to their tunes even to an extent of dropping other players they feel r not helping their game… nde ka NAM nkachaniso kuti kusatsitse mapewa pamaso pa Mwawi…mxiiiiii

  11. I personally feel that what the queens have done is fantastic. I watched them and they’re really great. I liked their attitude to each one of the games. They really worked hard to put Malawi on the world map but the odds were against them. I also congratulate NAM for their commitment to discipline which, in my view, is a prerequisite for any meaning progress to be achieved in any society or institution. I really missed Mwawi’s presence in the team but, having followed the controversy that led to this, I feel that NAM made the right decision to drop her and give a chance to others who equally deserved to represent this great republic at the tornament. I have a strong opinion that Mwawi should have done better and it would have been worrisome has NAM fallen into her trap. NAM saw her problem and focused on the bigger picture – Queens is for 17 million Malawians – much as they have the duty to listen to individuI interests. We need this approach in political parties, families, government, villages, etc. and Malawi will begin to develop. Given more opportunities, I am hopeful that this team will reclaim Malawi’s lost glory in the near future. My advice to Mwawi is that working in a national team requires one to rise above personal commitments. It is an owesome responsibility. It is a call to national duty. I personally missed her presence in the squad. We did not deserve this loss. Next time, please consider our cry as Malawian netball lovers. We thank God for the talent that He has invested in you. We really missed you. But I think that NAM made the right decision since their’s is a call to national duty. There are moments when leaders NEED to make hard decisions like this one. I am sure this decision was correct.

  12. The five star underpeformance is not surpring at all. Credit should go to NAM for failing the Nation. This stupit NAM must be dsisolved ASAP. They have wasted tax payers money.

  13. Hard luck Netball Association of Malawi . The handwriting was written on the wall. Soldiers rarely go to battle without their best shooters or snipers. No. Veterans are always re-called for professional advice.

  14. Just wondering….is there a way we can punish Bapu , Waya etal for embarrassing the whole nation by their stubbornness? They were advised to let Mwawi play but they could not listen! Even the head coach resigned so that he could pump sense into Bapu and Waya….to no avail. Even the whole minister of sports could not vonvince Waya and Bapu to rescind their decision!

    1. To the unemployed NURSE. It is a pity to read comments such as, “If South Africa lost, what is Malawi.” Explain to me, how do you think the public out there will think about your patriotism to your own carea if you are not patriotic to your own Country. Shame.
