Mwiza Nkhata elected new president of Malawi Law Society
An associate professor of law at Chancellor College, a constituent college of the University of Malawi (Unima), Mwiza Nkhata, has been elected as the new president of Malawi Law Society (MLS) during the elections held at the end of a two-day conference at Nkopola Lodge in Mangochi.
Nkhata, who is also an influential legal commentator in Malawi media, has replaced Khumbo Soko who did not seek re-election after serving for one term.
According to official results, Nkhata emerged winner of the polls after defeating two other challengers. He polled 77 votes against private law practioner Gift Nankhuni’s 40 while Edwin Banda did not get any vote despite and was not present during the elections.
The positions of honorary secretary and treasurer went unopposed to Michael Goba Chipeta (retained) and Burton Mhango respectively.
Mhango took over from Felister Dossi who competed on the position of vice president but lost to Alfred Majamanda by 49 votes to 74.
Committee members are Tadala Peggy Chinkwezule, Martha Etta Kaukonde and Chipiliro Chitsonga.

As usual when two or three names from the north appear in an organization’s hierarchy it raises issues of regionalism. Why is it so? Why are northerners so hated? And why do people from south or Centre think that there is only tribe in the north, Tumbuka? Why does this ignorance not go away? This was an election, no one was appointing people into positions. Please stop hating people based where they come from
Vwavwa, the answer is prejudice. Their coming to other regions has caused a stir. Jealous has sprouted against them for what they do, and has paved way to hatred which is passed on from parents to children, from one generation to another. Remember, it was the colonialists who employed the “divide and rule” that entrenched ethnicity. When Malawi became independent in 1964, Kamuzu espoused merit and never mind where one came from but gave aspirant jobs to perform for mother Malawi, as for people up north they did not disappoint. Congrats to Mr Nkhata. It was gonna be a travesty of justice to have either Mr Banda or Nkhuni as president of the very body that previously sanction them…remember their cases of defrauding clients.
