Mabedi won’t be Malawi assistant coach —Kaizer Chiefs
South Africa-based Malawian coach Patrick Mabedi has turned down an offer made by the Football Association of Malawi (FAM) to appoint him as the assistant coach to the Malawi national team on temporary basis.
FAM president Walter Nyamilandu said they appointed Mabedi following a proposal made by national football coach Ronny van Geneugden (RVG) to have the former Flames’s skipper and Peter Mponda in his technical panel.
But Mabedi currently assistant coach at South Africa Prmeier Soccer League (PSL) outfit Kaizer Chiefs will not be taking the post.
The PSL club confirmed that they had indeed received a request from the FAM to bring on board Mabedi on a part-time basis.
“Kaizer Chiefs received an e-mail on 5 March from Walter Nyamilandu-Mandu, the president of the Football Association of Malawi, requesting the services of Patrick Mabedi to assist the Malawian national team on a part-time basis during FIFA calendar dates and during the off-season,” a statement issued on the club’s official website read.
However, the club confirmed that Mabedi would not be taking up the job with Chiefs football manager Bobby Motaung expressing his gratitude on behalf of the club that FAM has considered one of their coaches for a role on the technical team.
“We also want to express gratitude at the consideration of one of our technical team members being called up to serve the country of Malawi,” Motaung expressed.
“We would like to continue cooperating and collaborating with Malawi on various areas. We wish the Malawian national team all the best in their upcoming matches,” Motaung concluded.
The Malawian-born coach spent eight years at Amakhosi between 1998 and 2006, and has worked under some of the most prominent coaches in the South African game which included former Chiefs and now current Ajax Cape Town mentor Muhsin Ertugral during his time with Mpumalanga Black Aces.
Prior to returning to Naturena, Mabedi was also the coach of National First Division (NFD) outfit Cape Town All Stars.
Good decision. FAM was just going to disturb his job with Chiefs like they did with Enerst
