Malawi citizens critique President Mutharika over 1 million job remark
Malawians have taken up to social media to critique President Peter Mutharika for suggesting that it was impossible to create one million jobs in Malawi in a year.

State Vice-President Saulos Chilima , who is leading the newly established United Transformation Movement (UTM), has said he would create one million jobs once voted into power.
In a pre-recorded program to be aired on State-controlled Malawi Broadcasting Corporation (MBC), Mutharika said:
“Nobody can create one million jobs in this country. Never. It can never happen.”
But some Malawians rebuked the President that it was indeed easier to get involved in K145 million alleged kickback than create jobs of such magnitude.
They were referring to the contentious K145 million donation suspected to have been proceeds of crime in much-publicised Malawi Police Service (MPS) food rations scam deposited in the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) account.
Mutharika is the sole signatory to the DPP account which received the ‘suspicious’ funding.
Those commenting on Facebook argued that Mutharika could not even think of creating jobs, saying his government was failing to employ government trained teachers for two years now.
Zameer Karim’s Pioneer Investments is under Anti-Corruption Bureau probe for a K2.7 billion food rationing scandal.
Following a leaked Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB) document which implicated the DPP and President Mutharika in a police food ration scandal, the DPP-led government has come under heavy public criticism with human rights defenders calling for the resignation of President Mutharika.
Reacting to the development, rights activist Gift Trapence, who is also deputy chairperson for Human Rights Defenders Coalition which has been pushing for justice on the matter, said the DPP’s announcement to pay back the money amounts to admission of guilty.

atate inso simutha kuchita create 1 m jobs .?simutithandizatu kkkkkkk
Malawi need more teachers, police officers, more nurses, hospital assistants, more business to employ more people….. the more people are employed the more the tax base, the more the economy grow.
How many jobs has DPP government created in the past 4 years?
AMalawi kukonda kunamizidwa. It’s simply not possible to create a million jobs in just one year in Malawi. Is Chilima talking about jobs or piece works? (Chilima akunena ntchito kapena ganyu?)
Mulimonsemo kaya ntchito kaya ganyu bola at the end of a day ukhale nkenakake kokadya ku den, SKC bravo
I would rather hear a president wannabe challenging himself to creating jobs because if he doesn’t we can take him to task. At present we have a hopeless and uninspiring situation that needs to stir up the citizenry. If a president can’t do anything for his people why is he on the throne? The question is, can someone do something about massive unemployment? And it seems someone has a plan. Don’t shout it can’t be done yet. APM is a qualified lawyer, what has he done to improve the judiciary? This is an area he should have excelled but dololo. What he can’t do others can do. Read about King Joash in the bible at the age of 7 he accomplished what men before him couldn’t do. I mean just to make his subjects revere God. I will not believe APM story he got his chance to leave a good legacy but blew it
If APM has said he will create 1 million jobs all those who are say it is not possible could have been saying boma ilo. Npw Chilima has said it mukumva kuwawa
Dear Mr president
If your government was able to save
-4 billion/CDF funds = 3, 300 jobs created in 1 year
-145 million/pioneer investment=120 jobs created in 1 year
-1. 9 billion/escom fuel= 1, 580 jobs in 1 year
-40 billion/FISP= 33, 333 jobs in one year
-54 billion/escom mid procurement = 45, 00 jobs in 1 year
-16 million/beer subsidy BT only = 13 jobs in 1 year
All those getting 100-120k a month
DPP blue night donations/state owned org = jobs created ????
District councils/money lost = jobs created ????
If indeed you are able to give
-Tax waver to manufacturing companies
-Reduced import rated on imported raw materials
-reduce interest rates from commercial banks
-bonds for legitimate SMEs to fund orders
With those few examples your government would be able to create something positive. So never say never Mr president, tell us its very difficult but possible and will all believe you.
Loud and clear
Those criticizing lack vision. When President John F. Kennedy announced in 1961 his ambitious plans of sending an American safely to the moon before the end of the decade, I am sure people with the same mentality as APM and most critics here felt that was mission impossible. Eight years later in 1969, Apollo 11 Commander Neil Armstrong stepped on the moon surface. Vision is the hallmark of a transformational leader. Clearly we need a visionary leader like Kagame, able to transform the country within a short time and APM is nowhere near that visionary leader. Curbing corruption is key to creating these jobs. With billions ESCOM is losing every year through corruption, how many jobs can it create both directly and indirectly? With the millions possibly billions being corruptly acquired by the president and his cronies, how many roads, schools, hospitals etc can we construct creating jobs in the process?
When JFK pronounced the vision to send nan to the moon and return him safely to earth, USA already has an active space program. So the pronouncement was not unrealistic.
Creating 1 million jobs in 1 year in Malawi is unrealistic. The USA, the world’s biggest economy create about 2 million jobs per year. Is it conceivable for Malawi, among the poorest countries, to create half the number of jobs that America creates.?
You know how many jobs USA creates /per year. Do you know how many DPP government has created in the past 4 years?
Do not start cheating people here. It is not the largest economy that creates jobs, It’s the FASTEST GROWING economy. Most African countries with growing economy could relatively create more jobs than established big economies in the West.
Example mulimi wokhazikika ndi ma farm, zigayo koma for whatever reason sakufuna kukulitsa investment yake ndi wina wachinyamata wanyong akufuna farm yake ikule, he even goes kukatenga loan for that investment, ndani angalembe anthu ambiri pa farm yake? STOP LYING!!!
Ma theory anu achina Goodall are obsolete and FAKE pano.
SHAME!!!
petulos mutharica , i have no problem with you but the people surrounding you.
Malawians let’s stop hero-worshiping and believing that whatever our leaders are saying is gospel truth. Take time to critic what your leaders dangle infront of you.
Creating 1 million jobs is not easy and more so in one year. It will require massive investments this poor country cannot afford.
For instance let’s take kabaza as the cheapest investment for job creation, with a bicycle, additional fixtures and registration at about k80,000 it will take k80 billion to create 1 million kabaza jobs.
Then we will have ask ourselves do we have a market for 1 million kabazas, azikwera ndangati?
Further questions will be how many jobs will be lost because kabaza have flooded the market? There will be less demand for minibuses hence fuel as well, second hand shoes and shoe repairers since people will not be walking longer distances hence less wear and tear, etc as a result there will be massive job losses in those sectors.
Please let’s tell our illiterate voters the truth.
talk is cheap, how many jobs did Dr Chilima create when he was the president?. Malawians are easly fooled when someone preach what their heart desires. Judgement should be made based on what has been achieved not what is preached. They know there is nothing you can do if they fail to deliver whats in power.
Was Chilima the president? Do you know the duties of the vice president? Nzeru zopelewera.
First of all Chilima was the VP. DPP team A would not let SKCimplement any bright ideas because they thought he was out shinning them
The idea of creating jobs was started by DPP in its budget What UTM is doing is mere copyright. With the difference on figures basi So UTM give us something new not just copyrights ,!
So where are the jobs that DPP created????
Which is more of a lie. Creating 1 million jobs or making Malawi like Europe
inept pumbwa. pumbwa is always happy in guava trees damaging, stealing. mr. 145million kwacha has failed us, what he thinks ndi kuba basi!!….timid leader, empty headed
Please Mr. President, keep quiet if you are so incompetent to create jobs in this country because others can. We know all you are an expert at is to corruptly amass worth through hook and crook and what immediately comes to mind is the K145m easy money from a crooked Indian.
If you think it can’t be done then you are apparently in the wrong job. Step aside and make way for those who will do it!
The negative comments against Chilima here are visibly made by Dausi, Ben Phiri, Mchacha, Chaponda, Girizeda and Kankhukwa. Very dull characters!
This is exactly why we are saying Mtchonayu wakula , anasiya kuganiza.
Komanso Akuluwa, DPP government cannot chifukwa chakuba. But if you let free ESCOM , Water Board, MACRA, ADMARC, Police, Prison, MBC, Ministry of Health and Education just a few , its possible.
Makani a anthu enanu ngosathandiza..prrsident akukuunikirani kuti nzosatheka zomwee mukuuzidwazo, inu nkhongo gwas kulimbikira kukakamira za bodzazo..kutukkwana munthu yemwe akukuunikirani..mawa mukagwira fuwa la Moto nuzizalira…small brains don’t have Vision..thats why utsigoleri umafunika wisdom..
So according to you, only Peter knows how to think. No Malawian thinks better? This is myopic thinking.
Tinaona Bingu he was real president, not this pig, its possible to create 1,000,000 jobs a year, the thing munthu akakula nzeru zimatha. This guy is old, he is a bove 86 years, he must retire!!!!. At 65 a human being is surposed to retire for new blood, why life ku Malawi tima kakamira khalamba?
Mr APM .!!! Jobs does not mean office work only. Let me give u a crue- Press Agric requiered 3 billion kwacha bail out when yo brother bought the jet. PAL crumbled in his face. Over 20000 direct jobs were lost in a year. The farms are idle now. Most of the kabaza boys could be at the farms. You could not spent money to buy maize in Zambia. You could export a lot more soya to china or produce diesel localy( ask Zeruzabambo) how to do it. USA tariffs have affected USA farmers and Chines consumers. a lot of money is going through the drain in the form of donations. Financial istututions Like Getbuck is charging more than 100 % interest under yo watch stealing from civil servants especialy teachers to make ends meet latter alone widening the end. In short bail out or subsidize comercial farmers and Small Scale bussineses so that they employ other. Do not subsidize the gogos who cannot hold a hoe. You can create >1 m jobs by empowering the locals. MYP employed youth on top of training them in varius job. By the way I service your MG vehicles because I am ex MP. not from community college. ASK Dausi how he did it with Kamuzu and swallow yo pride.
sheee hear hear hear…….
A practical way of turning Malawi into a Europe is keeping Malawians busy by giving them a million jobs. How menial the craft will there is honour in having earned what you eat. Sweat for your sweet. 145m as part of kickbacks in your comfort zones Chilima has a message that pricks the ears of the president and it resonates with the electorate. People in Mulanje and Thyolo are landless tea estates that have enriched our politicians through kickbacks have impoverished us even more the spirit of John Chilembwe is still crying over landlessness our president is skirting the issue. Chilima will tackle it head on not a matter for nitwits. Thieves can roar today but 2019 will spoon them out
LET POLITICIANS NOT FULL US ..WE HAD ENOUGH FROM DR BAKILI MULUZI… CHILIMA IS ANOTHER CROOK
It’s easier to steal MK 145m from tax payers than to create one million jobs………komanso a Pumbwa!
Promising to develop Malawi like Europe is more far fetched than promising a million jobs!!!! I think the latter is more realistic Mr Thief in Chief !
Alamu Pumbwa Mwakula kuba basi. Manyazi mulibe.
Malawians are difficult to understand. Are you indeed serious 1 million jobs can be created in a year in Malawi. From which industries. Stop sleeping and wake up you sleepers. This is a fact, no man can create 1 million jobs. I listened to Chilimain Blantyre where he thinks to create jobs. He mentioned of building houses and people will be employed there, serious. With you Banda degree, can you go to construction of houses. With all those fake degrees that have no value on the world market, what can you be a brick layer, a plumber or carpenter.? Even 145million cannot create a job for your brothers and sisters. He mentioned of people aging driving license to help them get jobs. How many fake driving licences are people having obtained through corrupt means are rotting in our neighbours pockets. Stop fooling people. The devil you know is better than the one you don’t know.

Were you drunk? Too angry?
Olo ngati Pumbwa unaphangira kwambiri zipwete zakubalalikitsa.
Why this Incoherent writing you Pumbwa!!!
What the president is saying is that there are not 1 million Lhomwes to employ. All qualified Lhomwes have been employed by this tribalistic president!
Those who want to be fooled by Chilima let them believe he can create 1 million jobs at their own peril.
That’s Apumbwa for you kuba basi anzao akuti if we can strategise our economy of Malawi very well we can create 1million jobs ayear yet Apumbwa says NO THAT’S IMPOSSIBLE KOMA KUBA BASI APUMBWAAAA
Mutharika is being honest. Our economy cannot create 1 million jobs unless Chilima means we will have more people breaking stones to make sand.
snail brain
Kodi akuluwa vuto lao ndi chani? Ndipo akufuna kumva chani kwa a Malawi? Ukutu ndi kyamba anthu dala kuti muziti a Malawi ndi a chipongwe! Inu ndi zingati zomwe mwalephela? If one is barren, and failing to impregnate a beautiful girl [mother Malawi] who is desperate for a child, why bother yourself critiquing somebody who is saying is fertile and can impregnate that girl? Tiyeni zikavuta tidzivomera kuti zatikanika…………………………………….!!
Then why are you president if you cannot create jobs? How about you stop corruption at ESCOM and Water Boards to get magetsi and water running. Once you do that there will be plenty of manufacturing companies opening in the country which will create plenty of jobs. It’s kinda stupid when you travel outside the country you always say you’re inviting investors when the country doesn’t have running water and blackouts are a new normal. It doesn’t surprise me that you Mr President lack common sense just like Americans since that’s where you spent most of your adult life. You need to go back to a country with a majority of ignorant people.
Only a FOOL can believe the one million job lie by Chilima. Mr President is very right. 2019 APM bomaaaaaa!
Mr. 145mn dont think others cannot do better on what you have failed.
All you know is giving the little jobs to your tribesmen.
Mr President, what is more, difficult to promise people that you will change Malawi into Europe (whatever that means) and for someone to say he will create 1 million jobs? Tell us your dreams and don’t disapprove of other people’s. You were given five years to demonstrate to Malawians that you were the man for the job, unfortunately, there are many who feel you have not lived to their expectations, including me.
People, am not a fan of APM but let’s concentrate on critiquing what he exactly said not on something we think is fertile ground for our attack. He is correct to say the 1 million jobs promise is beyond a fallacy. Love him or loathe him , he is damn correct on this one unless you are one of those senseless dancers at UTM rallies.
tell us why not
You are just as daft as him. 1 million jobs is a possibility. Enanu jobs you think everyone will be in office.
How about developing Malawi like Europe? Isn’t that more far fetched than creating a million jobs?
Headless chicken
Chokapo anzako azachite create 1 million jobs ngati iweyo sungathe
Once upon a time, this country had so many companies which employed many Malawians. We have PTC chain stores in every district and in cities, they were several in many locations, these employed people. We had battery making companies, these employed people, had B and C, PEW, Mulanje canning factory, MDI, Kandondo, Maconel, Malawi Pharmacy, and many other companies that are now dead or moved out of the country Lever Bothers for example. The government every year could advertise jobs targetting those who had finished school then. This was almost 25 years ago, Why would it be impossible to create more jobs when we have a shortage of teachers when we have a shortage of health personnel. Jobs are not created by the government alone, the government provide an environment for the private sector to thrive and many people will be employed, so when they say jobs will be created does not mean they will work for civil service.
Chilima our VP has been in that position 4 years how many jobs has he created. He was chairman of reforms check his booklet he presented to H E did he mention how this could be done in it if not.He is lying.
This country lost jobs when we stopped planning to increase our power capacity generation, Lever Brothers,BAT,B&C PEW left the country and recently TEM moved to Kenya.
Worse of all the bad decisions the country made was the selling of Malawi Development Corporation companies to Asians we goofed. However that sold the companies can be justified. The country trained Alimi Ku Bunda anathamangira Ku ma offesi. Kamuzu amapatsa anthu achipani ma farm kuwatsegulira Ngongole Ku Commercial Bank osabweza ngongole Bank inagulitsidwa lero ndi Standard Bank
Ku ESCOM ma staff mukuba mafuta, ma energy saver bulbs kukagulitsa Ku misika Ku Lunzu, kwa Chinsapo Ku Chiwanja kuba mawaya a post office. A Malawi tanyanya kuba cashgate Watergate, pipegate wiregate maizegate.Tonse pakufunika tilape kutembenuka mtima tithandize Pulezident kutukula dziko.
Magetsi ayamba kale kukonza kubweleka magenerator podikira kukonza Ku kamwamba ndi connection ya ku Mozambique pa Phombeya ena muluba ma wayanso.
RNA mkumati bwanji titengenso makampani womwe amwenye angular aja.Good koma inuyo ngati simusoya kuba kumakamwera mowa kugulira ma six pack pa Mango zotukula dziko iwalani Lapani Lapani Tikweze dziko
True, and stolen moneys can be chanelled into job creating activities
Chilima recommended reduction of ma PS some retired did he replace them with young blood. You remember that restructuring Mukugona mukamwaa six pack there was reduction of staff kayanganeni ma records.
Zonsezi zinatha chifukwa chakubha aMalawi – all the way from Kamuzu, Zenasi Ungapake, Cecilia Kadzamira all the way to Saulos Chilima. Malawi will always stay at the rock-bottom of development due to non-patriotism. Satana sat on our backs and would work in reverse direction. Taonani Chakwera preferred to abandon the work of the Lord in favour of earthly trappings. An average Malawian thinks of kubha all the time.
In the old days, the government, i.e. the people of Malawi, owned many businesses and industries. The Americans and some other donors insisted that we must sell off these national assets, i.e. privatize, in order to attract international hand-outs. We exchanged employment-generating national enterprises for funds that could be easily misappropriated by corrupt politicians. We are now suffering the effects of having acted on the advice of foreigners ignorant of Malawi, instead of thinking things out for ourselves.
Job creation is visionary: Chilima will create more than 1000 jobs within a year through sound education, agriculture, health, energy, tourism, the list goes on and on. Mind you without stealing Government money.
For example interconnection of electricity will give power to the industries thereby creating more jobs for adequate production. Tapping water from Lake Malawi for irrigation will create a lot of jobs. This is just an example.
Chilima pur VP in the past 4 years has been in the presidency doing nothing even when he was opportuned to chair governments reforms. Tell us now how many jobs he created. Check the reforms booklet he presented to the President if this was included.Apo bii ndi chunii. basis Nkhani za pa mowa pakumwa ma six pack pa mango ,basiao katoto etc
