Malawi embassy staff active in DPP UK wing
Staff working for Malawi High Commission in London is now fully involved in the operations of the ruling DPP external wing formed in UK recently.
The embassy hosted DPP wing members to a dinner where they were introduced to the staff and assured them that they are free to use the Malawi mission for their operations.
During the meeting in London, all embassy staff including the group’s advisor, former Inspector General of Police, Mary Nangwale pledged total support to fight opposition and anti-President Bingu wa Mutharika elements in the UK.
“Only the military attaché, Colonel Sikwese exonerated himself to the group saying as a military man he was apolitical,” said one of the members who attended the meeting.
Nangwale launched the DPP wing in Bristol weeks ago.
Some members of the grouping are reported to have been promised jobs in Malawi.
The committee comprises of Chairperson Sumani Kazombo, Treasurer Mrs Chimwemwe Nhlane, vice treasurer Gershom Kazombo, secretary Rhoda Nyirenda, spokesman Sembe Gondwe. Others are Scotland Chapter chairperson Joe Bakuwa, secretary Alphaeus Ngonga and vice secretary Malcolm Chikonde.
Sembe Gondwe, a columnist of Nyasa Times, however downplayed that the Embassy is pushing the agenda of the group despite having Nangwale as advisor.
“Members of the Malawi embassy can be invited by any other group and it is entirely up to them to make a decision of taking up the invitation or not,” Gondwe said.
He also dismissed that they were job seekers hence being members of ruling party, saying members “are doing all this for the love of their country.”
But Gondwe was promised the job of Director of Information . He was however duped when government appointed Isaac Cheke Ziba.
Meanwhile, the DPP wing in conjunction with the embassy is organising a fund raising event in Manchester on February 25 to help bankroll the Mutharika’s party.
