Contractor Mota Engil moves equipment to Likoma jetty site
Hundreds of enthusiasts stood ashore of the Nkhatabay port to witness onloading of heavy and high valued earth moving equipment destined for Likoma Island.
Every step of loading the equipment which included a bulldozer and an excavator onto a pontoon (barge) was carefully done.
Across the mainland shores, hundreds of people at the island were waiting patiently.
As the equipment docked hours later, women danced, men jumped in joy as children were uncontrollable running closer the offloading equipment.
Elders told Nyasa Times they have never seen such huge equipment on the Island in years yet alone coming to put up a Jerry, warehousing facility and offices.
Mota Engil Malawi officials were seen ready to take up the new project demands with some having arrived a week earlier ahead of the equipment arrival.
Chiefs and politicians were loss of words for the coming development which will spur tourism, trade and agriculture by connecting the beautiful island to the rest of the mainland.
The project, valued at K10 billion will commence this week.
Currently, travellers need to get off the main ships that dock metres into the waters and get onshore using small boats.
With the coming of the Jetty, large volumes of cargo will be moved easily on and off the shore, increase the number of local and international visitors and tourists to the island.
These are DPP gimmicks. In 214 the mota engel brought equipment at Liwonde- Naminga to cheat people of Machinga. After the elections the following week they removed the equipment.

People of Likoma should be very careful, not to be overexcited and carried away with DPP antics. DPP gurus behave like conmen or tricksters.
With same Moatal Engil projects have been seen to commence, bringing in all the heavy equipments, machines only to take them away later. And you hear later they have subcontracted a 20km road to 3 other companies (Sawa & Mulli) but still the work stalls, nothing happening.
Then eventually Mota Engil without shame transfers the equipment’s away.

This project is a window dressing. This equipment will be coming and going without anything tangible seen on the ground, ask people of Mponela in Dowa
about a much awaited district hospital. DPP is crooked. Give them the vote and see next.

This is a month of projects yeah dpp where were you the past years kodi? Never in our history have we seen so much projects being commission plus a few stones as usually here and there KKKKKKK 21st May is still your fate date for all the blackouts, impunity corruption and nepotism!!

Why should this be news, DPP won’t take a dime out of its pocket. All projects with Mota Engil are corruption tainted that is why it gives DPP big money for campaigns. Malawians will be saddled with the debt

Iam more than happy with this development and kindly also consider Nkhotatakota and Usisya. people have suffered for a long time and consider buying a bigger ship and badges for trasportation of people and goods as the case was in the 60s and 70s. there used to be a simple jetty in Nkhotakota and since it col lapsed the place is highly neglected.
