Opposition prepares Chakwera ‘inauguration’: To incite more anarchy ‘Operation Al-Bashir’

In denial of their defeat in the elections last week, main opposition Malawi Congress Party (MCP) is lobbying new UTM Party of former vice president Saulos Chilima to be party to the inauguration of  MCP leader Lazarus Chakwera as the ‘people’s president’ and  jointly incite more anarchy which should lead to the forced removal of President Peter Mutharika.

Chakwera ‘will not accept election result’

They have named the protests “Operation Al-Bashir” – after the public demonstrations that led to the removal of president Omar Al-Bashir in Sudan last month.

“Chakwera will be recognised as the legitimate president of Malawi,” said a party official privy to the plot.

Their intention is to use the demonstrations to cause anarchy, make the country ungovernable and gain calls for Mutharika to step down.

In their plan, they have chosen northern region as a location to trigger the protests which they intend to spread across to all regions.

Speaking on BBC Focus on Africa in his first interview since his opponent, President Peter Mutharika, was announced the winner of the presidential race. Chakwera said he will continue to challenge the result of the Malawi election in the court.

Chakwera insists there is still a case to be heard in the courts.

“If we do not fight for the Malawians they may never know what actually happened,” he said.

He argued that there had been serious irregularities in the counting of the vote.

“It’s an electoral system in which officers of the electoral commission can use Tipp-Ex [correction fluid] on results sheets from all over the country… and yet there are no consequences,” he said.

Meanwhile, intelligence reports indicate Chakwera was holding a meeting with rights activist Timothy Mtambo on the organization of the protests.

Throughout Mutharika’s first term, Chakwera and Mtambo have worked together in organizing anti-government public demonstrations.

However, this time around, they are using their grievances on the elections in organizing the current protests and they want to amplify pockets of post-election violence seen in central region.

Ironically, Mtambo himself has endorsed Mutharika’s victory by signing a Malawi Electoral Support Network (MESN) final report which declared Mutharika the winner. Mtambo signed the document in his capacity as board member of MESN.

Malawi Electoral Commission (MEC) pronounced Mutharika the winner of the elections on Tuesday. In addition to MEC, major political parties, National Initiative for Civic Education (NICE) and MESN operated independent national tally centres all of which found Mutharika the winner.

Final results show that DPP won on all three fronts. Alongside winning the presidential vote, DPP also amassed more councillors and MPs, beating all other parties that competed in the election.

Mutharika has rejected criticism of the election result, saying international observers had given the vote a clean bill of health.

“So, it is now the time to move on. The elections are over. There is time to fight, there is time to unite, there is time to argue and time to agree. There is time to pursue our partisan goals and time to pursue our national goals,” said Mutharika when he was sworn in for the second term at a ceremony held at Kamuzu Stadium in Blantyre on Tuesday.

He said the election was a collective achievement for the country.

“For the first time in the history of our country, this election was entirely funded from our own sources. Let us be proud of ourselves as Malawians. This is time to unite and develop this country and now is the time. Malawi is the only country we have,” said the President.

Former president Bakili Muluzi, several judges of the High Court and Supreme Court, the clergy, traditional leaders and MEC commissioners also witnessed the occasion that lasted about 90 minutes.

International election observers such as European Observer Mission (EOM), the Commonwealth and SADC have described the elections as free, fair, credible and well-organized.

Mutharika is expected to be inaugurated this Friday at the same venue before holding a victory rally at Njamba Freedom Park in Blantyre on Sunday.

  1. I see something that Malawi has never seen happening. If we choose to fight someone who thinks he is fighting for justice then you will kill Innocent Malawians.

Chakwera is doing what He thinks is justice and to my side i think he is doing what i feel its right. But we Malawians including you Nyasa Times becareful with what you write. Let Justice be fought in court not you aiding violence through media.

Am sure you no idea the level of anger is in most Malawians right now, in case we don’t know we are fighting against almost 60% of the population. which is a significant number if translated.

Its High time we take Justice a serious Business in Malawi, am sure we both know how our judicial system is corrupt and how our Police services are corrupt. One thing for sure the same Judicial system will not run away from the truth this time, A thing which will never be hidden forever.

  2. Mwalenga dala nkhaniyi kuti mumumange. I know mtendere ukukusowani chifukwa mukudziwa ndithu kuti munthuyu munamubera. Anzanga a DPP chonde polani moto chifukwa mukapanda kusamala zikutsalirani mmanja izi.

  3. Mr reporter,be careful don’t play with Dr Chakwera. This is just a simple and free advise.

  4. Ndiye mukawalumbilitsa akulu oluzawo adzikakhalabe ku area 36 konkuja? Mwina mukufuna muwalumbilitse ngati Leader of Opposition?
People dont waste your time Chakwera has expired; choose Ken Kandodo to be the Leader of opposition. Whenever drugs have expired we throw them away, do the same with the expired Chakwera.

  5. Q. When is MCP ever going to accept defeat in a democratic election in this country?
    A. Apparently, never: except only when dictator Kamuzu conceded an embarrassing defeat in the first post dictatorship era. That was the only time, and it was probably only because he was in his dotage, and he had finally seen how his criminal government and Party, MCP, were loathed by Malawians.

The Northern Regions should never allow to be sacrificed in any experiment: the consequences, especially, of this proposed experiment would be dire.
Let oChakwera confine this to his own back yard, the Central Region; and, well, let him see how long his own Chewa mates would stand the heat from the law enforcers.I say this because, Chakwera and his Party followers are framing these elections as a tribal fight.
And, it’s an insult to compare APM with Al Bashir, by any stretch of the imagination. In governance, civility, respect for human rights … you name it! Stop the comparisons stat.

MCP would be wise to concentrate their introspective postmortem on why they lost. To be sure, they lost by a very slim margin, but a loss is never anything else: It can also be argued such a slim margin lends credence to the results – they were not doctored by MEC or anybody else.
While MCP are at their postmortem analysis, they may also consider a change of name too.
Suggestions: NMP – New Malawi Party; NMDP – New Malawi Democracy Party; MLP – Malawi Liberal Party. Symbols are very important, so anything with “black cock” – like MBCP (Malawi Black Cock Party) -won’t fly. Ditto for anything with “Congress” in it.
Otherwise it will be a very, very long time for MCP to win a Presidential election. And this all goes back to their criminal history under their wamuyaya leader, Hastings Banda. He sure left a messed up legacy alright.
That legacy is indelibly imprinted on most Malawians brains, and its association with MCP is VERY difficult to detach.
    IMHO.

  6. We are ready to fight for the truth.Dying for something is better than living for nothing.

      1. Its good to die for country men to be liberated from thieves! How do you feel when you segregate others? Its open secret that you don’t care and thought by rushing to taking oath everything will be buried………… never this time around!

        1. Hahahaha mmmmmm die for country men indeed. who is segregating who? O chakwera does not wish the Malawians good. how can someone will good will can think of taking leadership by force? Please let Malawians enjoy the gift from God because leadership comes from God not by force.

  9. Some of idiots you just comment without reading …check the article isa nonsense as it has conflicting dates …Agalu asakwata Alhomwe ..mwafikaliti muno munathawa njala Ku Mozambique

  10. koma anthu mukupanga blame Chakwera inu; aaaah vuto lanu ndichani? Can’t you see kuti this is just a stupid reporter who wants to play with your brain. Scrutinize his message and writing style then come back to me later.

  11. Come on Lazarus. That plan can’t work for you. Do you mean you want UTM to be part of that ?? Never at all . The problem is that opposition parties in Malawi ali ndi dyera too much. Every leader wants to be a president of Malawi. It can’t work. You were advised to unit into one block before elections to unseat DPP But Iwe unskana, Saulosi anakana Atupele anakana. Tsono ma results ake ndi amenewo. Saulosi ankati boma ili likupita koma anaiwalae kuti it’s not easy to unseat a sitting government. See what happened in Kenya, South Africa and even Nigeria. Please start planning for 2024 and stop using Ife a Tumbuka. We love APM we love DPP

  12. A lost reverend who fellout of the grace of God. Somebody confided in me that they have recruited suicide bombers for far east. I knew it all that this combination of Sheik and reverend will bring chaos to Malawi. If Chakwera claims the elections were not credible, how come he has accepted that he won as MP through the same incredible elections. This man is a hypocrite. Ndarama za Khatho mubweze.

  13. Dr Lazarus Chakwera might be very disappointed in the manner the elections were handled by MEC but honestly speaking he is not a war monger and will never be. He cannot propagate war . The writer of this article should be ashamed of himself by this blatant lie that Chakwera and UTM are planning to make this country ungovernable in a bid to take over the state.Nyasatimes as a credible organisation should censor these kind of articles that aim at bringing hatred amongst Malawians. This is totally a blue lie and should not be entertained at all. Articles like this are the ones that caused genocide in Rwanda in 1994. Nyasatimes in the name of God please stop posting news like this. Malawians do not want war for what.

    1. @Dines Gwamula:
Nonsense. Those MCP fellas who were blocking roads in Dowa, and punishing, variously, anybody who they perceived as from the South: And your oChakwera was nowhere to denounce those acts.
Don’t you think those actions could potentially start a Rwanda 2.0?
      Wake up iwe.

  14. The worst scenario is “Do Nothing”. Malawians have had enough of vote rigging and it’s disturbing and worrying that the elections referee, MEC, is shamelessly part of the rigging team. For how much longer will interference with peoples will continue? People have already started having misgivings about the next elections.

  15. If Chakwera wants to start war, he is stupid to think we can support that rubbish. We can not die for that idiot. Kodi Asemblies mumaphunzitsana chani- kuyioa mtima? Onse ndakumana nawo a assemblies are bad people.

    1. People must be careful with MCP and its leadership. They want to rule Malawi at all cost. This is dangerous. Dr Lazarus Chakwera must behave as a reverend who is very conversant with the Word of God. We will not admit to be used by him to advance his greedy agenda. I don’t think our UTM party and its leadership accepting this proposal at all. Mulungu amatiphunzitsa kulolerana pa zonse. Anthu ambiri omwe ndachedza owoneka opemphera kwambiri amakhala anthu oipa ndi okakala mitima, omva zawo zokha. I think most pentecostal churches have their own God and their own Bible. Akafuna chawo, olo chikhale cholakwika, amakakamira. This is not acceptable. Ife tinkadziwa kuti M’busa uyu ndi waliuma ndi wozikonda kwambiri.
I urge Dr Laz Chakwera to stop this nonsense with immediate, and move MCP forward. Fight your elections battles in the courts of law and not using this illegal means. My beautiful UTM, please do not accept this pastor to join him in this dirty and shady deal political deals. We were all aware that this old party will lose. We said it before kuti if you want to remove APM, make political alliance with UTM and not with cashgate queen and her tiny party. We don’t want war in Malawi, leave us alone. APM is now offically Malawi’s president, leave him govern the country, otherwise don’t use us. My sincere hope is that UTM will win May, 2024 Tripartite Elections with hope. Take your children and grandchildren to the streets (demonstrations) and not us ordinary citizens. Is MCP going to take care of our dependents (children, old parents, etc) when we are gone due to violent demonstrations?.

  16. My friend Sidik Mia, a JC holder from Chikwawa Secondary School wanted to make history in Malawi as the first VP from the Lower Shire. His ambitions have been thwarted by a pathological thief from the Lhomwe belt.

    1. Fuck you coward! we don’t care.We are ready for anything. To die for the truth is better than living for nothing.

  17. just sit down and don’t involve innocent people from north as your ground for this nonsese,i say big no

    1. The article is from an gent provocateur and he wants to taste people’s mind and their perceive motive following the controversial tripartite elections.

    2. Fuck you coward! we will fight for the truth.Dying for something is better than living for nothing.

  18. Chakwera just accept defeat. From the word go, you have been told through different channels that it was only if the opposition parties combine, Peter Mutharika would be unseated from his position of Presidency. Compounding to this several credible research institutions which are independent have warned us that Peter Mutharika will triumph. Our usual Kamlepo Kalua warned us of the same but you were adamant and greedy. You chose to give it a deaf ear and a blind eye but to favour the idiot Sidik Mia because of his money. You ignored Chilima, who was the poorest in the race to presidential position but you opted for the tired chief cashgate madam Mtila. Let me tell you this, Sidik is looking for your position of president and nothing else. You will come to agree with me in the near future when this thing starts in you circle. What Sidik is forgetting is that there is no way the Chewas can allow Msena to be the MCP president (Wa! inembo? Dyabu wapezipezi) ask Chakuamba will tell you in black or white. Usamukako kumeneko utaononga zako (Iwe ndi dyabu, psiru!!!) Chakwera we are many that support you but you did not listen to us ndiye usayambe mavuto because we will not support you in that direction. Otherwise Boma is at liberty kukufinya mmene angathere.

  19. Yes, use the TUMBUKAs and people from there as well as this group of people is ready to bust. Most of them are a confused lot as they are never sure of which candidate to vote for since they have never had one of their own, apart from Thom whoever…..

  20. Abusa mufuna muphetse anthu osalakwa apa. Kupitsa chala kubwenje kwa njoka ukutu.

  21. When rights of innocent people are butchered, they are made hopeless, they do not have a future, they are walking dead etc., the only left option perhaps to be heard are demonstrations. I am already dead because I am hopeless. If this is democracy then to hero with it

    1. Very useless indeed. This is a shame to the profession of Journalism. Lies like these will take us no where. Who is the master behind this silly article?

  22. mkokemkoke umeneu ,mngodziwiratu kut mizimu ya akufa yakwiya apa ,God have mercy on us

  23. McP has a bad record of assasinations, theft, violence and of not accepting defeating ( since 1999 ).

  27. Can the report of the international observers be shared with public please. We need to understand what they observe. I am afraid that they may be an expense for nothing. Not sure if they serve any useful purpose in African elections.
It is not the opposition demonstrations that will make the country ungovernable. It is the fact that the people can not respect and take seriously any president who openly rigged elections to stay in power, he was probably chosen by about 20% of the population which makes him an illegitimate president.

  28. what hell is this,Do you want to refer Malawi with Sudan no no no its not in Malawi,in the north whom are you going to torture and central region you want to hurt the mcp members who are in the there and southern region who are the targets because Mia is there and his family. So tell the nation where exactly are you going to do the demos

  29. You are the one you is inciting violence. This is a big lie and you can’t even put your name hiding behind Nyasatimes reporter.

  30. IFE PRESIDENT WATHU NDI CHAKWERA AND WE RECOGNIZE THAT HE IS THE HEAD OF STATE BKOZ HE WON ON BALLOT NOT THAT IDIOT MUTHARIKA WHO WON BY BACK DOOR

  31. This guy thinks he is relevant to Malawian politics. Does he know that that would be treason that Kamuzu and Tembo wouldn’t tolerate? Mwadziwa kuti ng’ona kulibe. Any way popeza olira saletsedwa.
