UN tells Anglican to allow Muslim girls in hijab attend classes: Calls for religious tolerance in Malawi
United Nations has told the Anglican church to allow Muslim girls at Mmanga schools in Balaka to attend school while in hijab.
The UN resident coordinator Maria Jose Torres says preventing access to services such as education because students choose to wear an expression of their religion goes against the important human rights and international standards on freedom of education.
“Such actions discourage girls from attending school, denying them the right to learn and actively participate in society, at a time when Malawi is focusing on ending child marriage and keeping girls in school,” saysTorres.
The statement from Torres follows religious violence between Christians and Muslims at the school on Monday after the Anglican run school sent back two girls who were in hijab Muslim gear.
Torres says all forms of violence, including endangering lives and the destruction of private and public property are considered criminal and unacceptable.
“The United Nations calls on all Malawians to respect each other’s religious beliefs and engage in peaceful dialogue to resolve differences,” she says.
She also called on the government to ensure that all people are able to exercise their beliefs and cultural practices free from persecution and discrimination.

I have read all the comments here and I have noted two big points;
(1) The focus is on Islam and not the subject at hand. The example that are being given are completely contrary because schools that were handed over to the government are different from that of privately owned ones.
For instance St Anthony in Thondwe, Zomba is owned and run by the Catholic as such whoever wants to study there has to conform to the values of Catholics, similarly Maryam girls a privately run Islamic school as such it derives its rules from Islamic establishment. On the other hand St Augustine schools in Mangochi are owned by catholics but are run by the government as such they conform to the statitutes of the govt thus why Muslims are allowed to put on hijabs, just like Al bakir in domasi
Similarly M’manga school is owned by the Anglican of course but it is run by the government meaning its the government who pulls most of the strings hence no reason to bar Muslims from wearing their head scaves, this is why the UN is coming in. They are only looking at our laws and making their opinion based on that.
(2)Another point I have noted is that most Christians view Islam with contempt. They think the world will be a better place without it. To them if a Muslim is killed, its a good riddance of waste stuff, a proof is already there coz 3 Muslims died in this fracas but none seems to care about it. However if it was vice versa then the media would have been awash about it. They claim that Muslims are violent people whenever they do something bad. But the same is never said when a Christian does that same.
My conclusion, two wrongs does not make right. Muslims or Christians, we must always remember we are all Malawians, the country cannot enjoy peace if one group of pple is being marginalised simply because of their religion. The violence that can ensue if we are not very careful about our undertakings, can affect all and sundry. The genocide that happened in Rwanda affected non other than Rwandans regardless of the side they were.
Let us all preach peace and co existence in every for u. History has already shown us that even if this country had no Moslems, thus not a guarantee that there will be peace.
But in France th burqa are banned, so tell France not Malawi and Anglican church.

Maria, has your institution ever visited Moslem owned schools? Do they allow students to put on things like Rosary by Anglican and Catholics? I totall disagree and strongly feel the Anglicans have a right as regards who they can admit into their schools and this is beyond UN’s mandate and or control!

Then we have other cultural religions eg musk dancers. So if the musk dancers also decides to be in class while in their religious attire will the class room environment be conduncive for learning? It has its own policies and rules and I should believe every parent and student who sends their children to this school are bound to abide by the set rules. Denmark. Belgium. Sri Lanka. Cameroon. Gabon. Congo Brazzaville. Part of Niger where Boko Haram is active. Catalonia in Spain. Morocco and Latvia are some of the countries hijab burhka or such facial veils are banned. Why is it not banned in Malawi. During Kamuzu’s era these dressings were not seen. It fitted the country as being secular.
Moslems preach religious tolerance and co-existence only when they are in minority. The moment they are in majority, they are so violent and are willing to eliminate others of different faiths!

The solution is for Muslims to build their own schools where they can freely do what they want. They should stop focusing on erecting mosques every one kilometre, they should invest in education infrastructure. Currently, they have very few secondary schools, less than five. They are the only religious grouping with a college let alone a university. They don’t even have a health care facility! Shame on you!!!

Would it not be nice for UN to ask Muslim schools as well to allow christian girls not to be forced to put on Hijab when they are their schools? I believe this would be a fair way of doing things.
I don’t agree with you Madam Maria Jose Torres. Wearing of Hijabs should not be accepted in Christian Schools. If Muslims wants their students to wear Hijabs they should just build more schools of their own. We all know that Gulewamkulu (Nyau) is regarded as a religion own its own in most parts of the Central region. Now what if people from the Central region decides to start wearing Gulewamkulu (Nyau) attires in Muslim owned schools, are they (muslims) going to accept them to attend classes?
Please Madam Torres, some of these rights do not apply in some parts of Africa. We have a diversity of cultures and some rights will just bring more conflicts. I wish this should get to you.
