Walter re-elected as FA Malawi president for fifth term: Alide veep as Mwenda floored

Football Association of Malawi (FAM) president McMillan Walter Nyamilandu has been re-elected for a fifth term on Saturday after  defeating his closets  challenger former vice president James Mwenda in an election overshadowed by violence as  police fired tear gas to disperse Mwenda’s supporters who were disputing the outcome of the election.

At the elective Annual General Meeting (AGM) , 36 eligible voters representing FAM affiliates voted to start with voting before deliberations.

After casting their ballots and counting finished, FAM electoral committee chairperson Justice Silvester Kalembera announced results that Nyamilandu was handed another four years of power.

Kalembera said Nyamilandu – a former football player for Be Forward Wanderers, University of Malawi and national football tema –  secured victory with 23 votes against  13 votes for Mwenda.

Nyamilandu, who has been FAM president for 15 years, stated that he wants to finish his projects and also to ensure that his term at Fifa Council runs simultaneously with his presidency at FAM so that the country can benefit through football development.

“I wanr  to continue to make significant contributions to my beloved country following my appointment as a member of the Fifa Council,” he said.

Mwenda is nout out of the FAM leadership as lawyer Jabbar Alide  was elected  first vice president with 21 votes against Daud Mtanthiko’s 15.

In other posts,  Othaniel Hara  was elected  second vice president with 21 votes against Lameck Khonje’s 15.

New executive members are Muhammad Seleman, Chimango Munthali, Rashid Ntelera and Christopher Kuyera.
