Once bitten, twice shy: Ravi Rach rejected for conditions for Malawi netball sponsorship

Netball Association of Malawi (NAM) has rejected the United Kingdom-based Rach Family Trust request to resume sponsorship  as part of the  K600 million five-year deal and wants to terminate the contract entirely after being duped.

Ravi Rach : NAM says conditions set for resumption of funding are unreasonable and unfounded and its unreasonable to continue with the agreetment

The Rach Family Trust chairperson Ravi Rach, who has been accused of  disregarding the deal since they signed a five-year contract in 2016, has come up with conditions to resume the  failed sponsorship deal.

Rach demands the dismissal of NAM general secretary Carol Bapu and apologies through the media  from the Minister of Youth, Sports and Culture, Malawi National Council of  Sporyts amd NAM itself for “negative publicity.”

NAM president Khungekile Matiya  has rejected Rach on recommendations from its lawyers and wants the contract terminated.

Matiya said the conditions set by Rach for resumption of the funding  are “unreasonable and unfounded.”

“To this end, we find it unreasonable to continue with the sponsorship agreement,” Matiya said in a letter dated January 24 2020.

Matiya said the conditions set by the UK-based trust were unrealistic and impractical

NAM has given notice to terminate the sponsorship agreement which was born out after Airtel Malawi decided not to renew a three-year K360 million Airtel Money netball sponsorship contract.

According to the contract, RTF was supposed to, among other things, bankroll a national netball league, provide the Queens with funds for their international engagements and local camping, provide uniform and organise refresher courses for coaches, umpires and administrators. NAM was expected to be receiving K120 million per year for five years.

After signing the agreement, the trust also promised to construct a state-of-the art netball court worth about K2 billion.

But Rach were not fulfilling its contractual obligations.

This year NAM was rescued by FDH Bank which came up with a mouth-watering K360 million three-year netball sponsorship that will see K300 million going directly to Malawi Netball Queens, K45 million towards a national netball cup and K15 million towards Netball Association of Malawi (NAM) administration.

Queens will get K100 million annually for activities and incentives while the netball cup and NAM will  receive K15 million and K5 million, respectively.
