From rango to regal: How Monica Chakwera is redefining class as Malawi First Lady

Calm, collected and visibly in control, First Lady Monica Chakwera stepped majestically in Parliament in Lilongwe on Friday to witness his love, President Chakwera, deliver the inaugural State of Nation Address (SONA).

But there was something spectacular about the simplicity of her outlook—choosing to look simple though elegant and standing.

This marks a remarkable difference from former first Lady Getrude Mutharika who, during SONA, always made news for mixing strange colors that, at some point, saw social media compare her to Rango.

The elegance in the red-blue dress Monica Chakwera put on, dazzled social media and tongues are wagging saying NO MORE RANGO DAYS!

Definitely, even Zambians who went to town over former First Lady’s scornful choice of dress can, today, sit on the laurels with remarkable admiration.

  1. Apa ndiye kuombera mmaja chinyau chosatha kubvina,i think nkhani zolemba zatha nanga apa chilipo choti nkuyamikira?mwalandira chi buns kapena?

  2. This game of comparing stupid things on people is not nice I tell you, particularly to the people being compared. Stop it, have something better to do Malawians, pleaseeee! Soon or later somebody will be arrested for making unpleasant remark/comparison on the lady being favourably compared today and you and her wont like it, trust me.

  3. I fail to understand what specifically is newsworthy in this article. Well, don’t be surprised in the next two – three years when you see a monster from the same angelic first lady you the media is pampering. All you’re doing is nurturing and training her. It beats me to hear and read some of the articles that are put into the public domain for general consumption, is it because somebody is trying to pisition him/herself just to be seen/heard and end up getting cheap rewards like the Brian Bandas of this world? Can you please leave the crap in your houses other than exposing your foolhardy in public?

  4. Who proof reads your articles ? Do you have an editor ??

” to witness HIS love ” – Idiots at least avoid grammatical and spelling mistakes in your articles….

Looks like it’s written by a Kindergarten child.

  5. It is a national embarrassment that this Standard-8 flowery-piffle features in a Google search for news on Malawi.

Why does the NT editor not read submitted articles, and correct glaring errors, such as the inference in the opening sentence that Monica Chakwera is transgender ( “… witness his love …” )?

  6. Oh please spare us the rot.I am neither a cadet nor anti MCP.But to say the former first was a rango is a misnomer. Getrude according to standards required of first ladies was always dressed appropriately and elegantly. THE current first lady has not shown much in terms of being fashion concious. If you talk of Mary Chilima then we agree. To say the current first ladys dressing on opening of parliament wss regal shows you are a fadhion bat. In other words blind. The dressing was too busy.Give her time.

  7. I saw her, there was nothing majestic about her. She sat there as a cornered cat who never believed in herself.

  8. What’s wrong with Rango I like Rango.

It’s an insult to Rango likening him to Getu.

  9. But why are women always judged by their looks and dress code and not by the content of their character ?…….let women wear whatever they want as men do…….

  10. Kodi mukuti chani apa? The whole story about how someone was looking in an event? Mwasowa zolemba apa.what if someone comments negative

  11. Tango
    Koma abale,
Mayi Muthalika ankachitila dala kuti anthu tizikamba za mavalidwe you akupakula chuma Cha boma

  12. I love her fashion, more importantly is her educational background ❤️❤️❤️💃🏻💃🏻💃🏻👏👏👏

  13. Meanwhile there is nothing class about this article. Let sleeping dogs lie. Why compare the two. Uchitsilu basi. This is stupidity to the call. Mbuzi yalemba article Pachakuti pako

  14. This rather pointless article will only serve to invite unnecessary and undeserved insults from supporters of other parties, especially from DPP whose President’s wife is being insulted in the article.
My own view is that First Lady Monica Chakwera is a decent and respectable motherly figure who doesn’t deserve to be dragged into Malawi’s poisonous and hate filled political discourse. Please, leave this decent and innocent woman alone.
