Chihana wants to meet Chakwera over poor selection of students to public secondary schools

Alliance for Democracy (Aford) president Enoch Chihana says he has engaged President Lazarus Chakwera over the poor selection of students to public secondary schools during the primary school leaving certificate results.

Chihana:  Aford wants government action on the concerns that have come from the general public on the inequalities of selection criteria to national secondary schools

Chihana says in a statement that he has engaged Chakwera on the issue regarding selection of Standard 8 learners to various government secondary schools.

“The AFORD president is requesting all  AFORD members and all concerned Malawians to have patience as we all wait for action to be taken by government on the concerns that have come from the general public on the inequalities of selection criteria to national secondary schools,” says a statement from his personal assistant, David  Katete.

Recently,  Ministry of Education in conjunction with Malawi National Examinations Board (Maneb) released the 2020 Primary School Leaving Certificate of Education (PSLCE) examination results, with only 37.7 percent of deserving learners selected to public secondary schools.

Minister of Education Agnes NyaLonje said government needs about K2.85 trillion to significantly alleviate the secondary school space challenges that is depriving learners of their right to education.

To double the transition rate from 37.73 percent to 76 percent,  she said the country needs 949 new secondary schools which translates to 11 388 classrooms and 5 694 classroom blocks. Each school is estimated to cost K13 billion, meaning government will have to spend K2.85 trillion.

She explained that the 250 United States Agency for International Development-supported secondary schools will create 1 000 classrooms by 2023. Currently, 44 of these schools have been completed and by the end of  2021, an additional 40 schools will be completed.

  1. Time is gone when northerners used to work hard in school.lero they are exposed to theba life and technology yawaononga.
Before then kunalibe entertainment ku mpoto and most parents were encouraging their kids to work hard in schools kuti azapite town plus kusatukuka kwakumaloko ambiri akachitadi bwino. But this is not the case ndibadwo walero akula chitauni n don’t blame quota system or government koma umbuli wa anawo.
What made aku mpoto ngati anzeru no longer exists makono aononga ndipo azitengera pagong’o.case closed

  2. To all Malawians especially fellow Malawians from the north I would like to tell you that do not be misled by people who are hell bent on regionalism……..the fact of the matter is that, as LMC said in parliament that the quota system of selecting students into public institutions is dead and buried that is exactly what has happened this year in this selection.

The problem is that for far too long we have been misled into the notion that that people from the north are more intelligent than people from the other regions in Malawi which is totally bullshit.

The fact that percentage wise more students from the north have pass the PSLC exams doesn’t mean that it will translate into more students from that region being selected into national secondary schools……..because the selection was based on quality and not quantity.

For those who do not understand the history of our country I would like to remind you that before.Malawi got its independence from the British, the northern region had an upper hand on our education system because there were more missionaries in the north of the country thanks to the cool weather in that region.

With more missionaries in the north at the time it also meant that there were more schools in the north than the other regions per capita. this is why for many years even after independence, proportionally there were more educated people in the north, but that situation was changed a long time ago and northerners should come to terms with this reality. In fact the north is now lugging behind in terms of quality of education and this is what we as a nation we need to address……..because quota system is dead and buried.

  3. kwa presdent??? minister of education 1st bwa!!!!!! awaso inu. mind set change ikuwapeza olo ikuwadutsa. tamuthandizeni mkuluyu angakabwezedwe

  4. Atumbuka kuzikonda,u wanted merit and this is merit.lots of students frm the North have not done well and even selection doesn’t see wher one is coking frm but merit only.u tumbukas are cry babies.it seems u wer living in dreamland for a long g time. This is reality check.one Malawi one Nation.

  5. …. So people from the north think that using merit is wrong? I understand that quota system is no longer applied in the selection of students after they pointed out that it exclude them. ….. I don’t think the casualties are only from the northern region, even in southern or Central regions could be more casualties than u can imagine. The concept that people from South or Central has a low IQ than those from the north is what makes Chihana and others to raise the issue.

  6. Chihana time to be relevant is long gone. The population in the north is less than a million. Did he want 2 million to be selected ndi azigogo omwe?

  7. There is nothing wrong, amene amayera kulira akanakhala Aku Mwera depending ndi population, but you can see abwera second, and you kumpoto Kuli anthu angati kuti mutisokosere, and my friend is right among the southern and Central we have the Gondwes, Msowayas, Munthalis, and check list yakwanuko ngati Ife tilipo kuzikonda basi, Si inu amene munkapangisa kuti makolo athu azingobwereza mu Standard eight, selection kumangokhala ya Ku Mpoto basi, ndiye lero tazindikiratu, equall share basi Abwana, you are just wasting your time complaining, Mmalo Moti mukakambirane ndi Chakwerayo zoti angomanga ma Secondary ambiri basi kalikiliki ndi zopanda Ntchito, poyamba tinkati Northerners are intelligent Bodza lenileni inali tribalism, zinatha basi amwene zimenezija qouta ibwelere basi kkkkkkkkk

  8. Yet we are talking of reducing presidential powers. After making decision on when MCE exams should be written and after employing his relatives and dismissing those not related to him or belonging to his party you want him now to start selecting students to schools. Chahana stop such stupid meeting

  9. Engaging Chakwera to do what? To deny a well deserving student space? Zakuvutani ingovomerezani. The problem is the belief that you are more intelligent than others. Alas the evidence speaks for itself that you are not and no tribe is more intelligent than another.

  10. Are you telling us the deserving students from the north have been left, that is after they scored higher than others from the south and center? If so then quota system is still there which I don’t believe is the case. If they have not scored higher than their counterparts then it’s clear that they were benefiting from quota system and the best way is to bring it back. By the way is it true that the best performing primary school has come from Phalombe once again? If this is true, honest Malawians should apologize to the people of Phalombe for accusing them wrongly that their pupils were benefiting from DPP tribalistic selection to secondary schools. Let me finish by saying that before we complain about selection anomalies we should do our home work well to make sure we are not defeating the purpose of discontinuing quota system. Otherwise let deserving students be selected on merit not just because we want to increase students from a certain region.

  11. I read that pass rate for the north is highest at 83% hw does it contribute only 10% to national schools? I strongly feel cadets want to sabotage Chakwela. Chakwela should wake up otherwise mcp will take a downward spiral by losing the northern vote. Free advice

    1. pass rate is an average you. Pamene musakumvetsetsa ndi pati. Selection is not based on average but top scorers

  12. It cost 13 billion to construct One secondary school?!! Not 13 million not 130 million not 500 million not 1 BILLION but 13 billion. Who did your estimations madame minister? This is how the steal starts!

  13. The problem you focus more on Msce leakages but there was massive leakages on std 8 exams, and this leakage benefitted south and central

  14. Atumbuka kuzikonda.. Bingu was right this country needs quota system at all levels.iyaaa wakwithu wakwithu paliponse. Uchindele

    1. They think they are brainy but now they face a reality check. Too much noise as usual. The good thing is that it has happened under chakwera

  15. So these people were actually beneficiaries of the quota system after all. Today the truth has been exposed, yet they cry foul again.

  16. Let’s be honest here, this tendency of northerners of always putting everything about them is now becoming irritating, what is so special about this region, are you telling me that those Mughoghos, Msowoyas, Gondwes, Kaluaa, etc selected from the South and Centre are not northerners? This is now becoming an insult to the rest of tribes here in Malawi. What makes you so special that everything should just be about you? This really shows how selfish northerners are, tukwanani bola ndanena, we have tolerated this nonsense for so long now!!

    1. The selection is done in a systematic way. If the majority who passed according to the criteria were Northerners then they deserve to be selected. As they say, ACCEPTANCE is the first step of moving on. Accept it and move on

    2. Just ignore them. Half of the mansions in Lilongwe belongs to them. They will never go and build them in Mzuzu but will mourn that Northern region is not being developed. Chakufwa Chihana was the only freedom fighter we knew at one point. He had all the chances of being our president but guess what? He lost it by showing his Tumbuka true colours – nepotism.

  17. We thought mcp hated quota system alas we were deceived. How can the party which introduced quota ever think about reducing or removing the system? Northerners must unite and have own party, if not will continue being used and abused by other regions who want to take power. Its sad that the beloved chilima has gone quiet when northerners continue to be sidelined and refused a reasonable share of national cake.

    1. This is not quota system. Anawo aposedwa basi. Maybe what you should be fighting for is the increase of secondary schools nationwide basi.

    2. Ingwenyama don’t expose your ignorance here. This story has been hijacked by misinformation. How many northeners actually stay in the north? Aren’t there northeners in the south and centre as well who wrote exams in those regions?
