Mpinganjira blasts DPP for Malawi‘s ‘economic genocide’
A senior ruling People’s Party (PP) official , Brown Mpinganjira, has said President Joyce Banda government is committed to transforming the country from the economic curse it has been sailing under the leadership of late president Bingu wa Mutharika and his DPP.
Mpinganjira, PP Treasurer General, was speaking at St. Michaels School ground in Chiradzulu district where he held a party meeting on Saturday.
He took a swipe at the former regime saying it plundered the country’s economy without any remorse.
“Let us appreciate the fact that heavenly God loves our country because if that was not the case then Malawi would have exploded had it been Bingu was still alive. Let us thank God for the mercy he has shown on poor Malawians by saving us all from the ruthless hands of the DPP regime,” said Mpinganjira amid chanting and cheering from the mammoth crowd.
Added he: “The DPP administration left nothing in the government coffers, this means that president Banda and her cabinet have started from scratch that is why things are taking long to stabilise. For this reason, I support calls from other quarters suggesting that the former regime be charged with committing economic genocide, because it is exactly what Mutharika and his cohorts did to the country.”
The maverick politician, who was among first cabinet ministers when United Democratic Front (UDF) a party he helped to found won 1994 polls, told the gathering that if the messy left by the DPP is to be cleaned out, then the country should put political or tribal affiliation aside and rally behind the first female president in Malawi.
Meanwhile, Mpinganjira has backed President Banda on the controversial gay rights issue saying the President has never supported homosexuality in her life time.
Said Mpinganjira: “It is a shame that some disgruntled political parties like DPP are busy spreading lies to the nation that President Mrs. Banda has legalised homosexuality that is a blatant lie. Our president is God fearing and there is no way she can do that.”
He therefore appealed to over 50 chiefs that attended the meeting led by Group Village Headman Nsaka to work with the new government saying, “The president has chosen to work with traditional chiefs in her safe motherhood initiative so this is the time for Malawian chiefs to be given respect and responsibility they deserve.”
PP regional governor Ali Mbalaka assured the chiefs that concerns being raised regarding difficulties they have encountered with banking system whenever they wanted to access their salaries that the president has already put in place a committee to review the process.
Mbalaka therefore concurred with BJ that the former regime was out to wipe the entire population by coming up with what he described as toxic economic policies that only benefited the ruling elite.
Apart from BJ and Mbalaka, another notable official who addressed the crowd was director of women for southern Province Irene Liabunya who assured her fellow women that once the president returns from abroad, Chiradzulu women would benefit from the loans the President is disbursing across the country through the Joyce Banda Foundation.
