Malawi’s Ireen Navicha bows out of Miss World after making history with Top 40 finish

Navicha has become the first Malawian representative to ever reach the Top 40 stage of the prestigious global pageant, which was taking place in Vietnam, marking the country’s best-ever performance at the contest.

A journey built on more than one strength

Her progression to the Top 40 came via the judges’ choice – a slightly unexpected route, given that many had anticipated her advancement would instead come through the Beauty With a Purpose challenge, a humanitarian-focused segment of the competition in which contestants are judged on charitable initiatives in their home countries.

Navicha had earlier impressed judges in that category, reaching the Top Six continental group representing Africa – a strong showing that had raised hopes she might progress further through that particular route.

Miss World background

Miss World is one of the longest-running and most prestigious international beauty pageants, first held in London in 1951.

Alongside the traditional beauty and evening wear segments, the competition places heavy emphasis on humanitarian work through its Beauty With a Purpose initiative, which rewards contestants for charitable projects undertaken in their communities.

The pageant draws representatives from well over 100 countries each year, with the Top 40 stage representing a significant milestone for smaller pageant nations seeking to establish themselves on the global stage.

Best showing yet for Malawi

While her Miss World campaign has now come to an end, Navicha’s achievement represents a landmark moment for Malawi on the international pageant circuit, surpassing all previous efforts by Malawian representatives at the competition and setting a new benchmark for future contestants to chase.
